Study area: Creative writing

Who offers it? Murdoch University 

How long does it run for? 12 weeks

Who should enrol? Anyone who wants to understand the themes, literary techniques and myths that inspire Australian poetry. You’ll have the chance to workshop your own poems with your classmates and shape them into something that could be ready for publication.

Who offers it? Griffith University 

How long does it run for? 13 weeks

Who should enrol? If you want to understand why politicians like Donald Trump are so popular with working-class people, this is the subject for you. It explores the rise of populist leaders across the world, who argue that they can protect everyday people from the corrupt elite. You’ll discover the impact populism is having on different democracies, including here in Australia.

Who offers it? La Trobe University 

How long does it run for? 12 weeks

Who should enrol? Anyone who wants to work in public healthcare, or already does. This subject will teach you about the health risks that affect different cultural groups, while also covering culturally sensitive ways of communicating.

Introduction To The Australian Legal System

Study area: Law

Who offers it? La Trobe University 

How long does it run for? 12 weeks

Who should enrol? Those who want to understand the complexities of our legal system, including how laws are made, and how key players interact within the police, courts and media. This can help you have the basic knowledge you need to apply for a Bachelor of Laws.

It’s also a subject worth considering if you work in journalism, social work, business or mental health, because you’ll learn how to navigate your legal obligations and become a better advocate.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and Psychology

Study area: Psychology

Who offers it? University of South Australia 

How long does it run for? 10 weeks

Who should enrol? This subject is a must if you want to work in psychology and counselling, because you’ll learn how to be culturally informed and respectful when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.

Even if you don't work directly in mental health, give it a look, especially if you're a youth worker, social worker or community liaison. The topics covered will help you make a more meaningful impact in your role.

Study area: Primary and secondary teaching

Who offers it? Curtin University 

How long does it run for? 13 weeks

Who should enrol? Anyone who wants to become a primary or secondary school teacher. This subject is the perfect introduction to your education studies. You’ll learn the literacy and numeracy skills required to prepare for the LANTITE and be a teacher in Australia.

How long does it run for? 12 weeks

Who should enrol? History buffs who are fascinated by the rise and fall of The Tudors. Explore the political machinations, marriages and religious conflicts that defined the reigns of Henry VIII, Mary I and Elizabeth I.
