Bachelor of Political Science and International Relations

Multiply your skills, knowledge and career prospects with a double degree in arts and law. You can immerse yourself in arts majors such as history, digital media or politics and international relations, while at the same time gathering the qualifications for a legal career.You may undertake voluntary legal experience and professional placement with legal firms, or undertake community arts learning opportunities, helping you build practical skills and develop professional networks.Graduates can pursue career opportunities that combine proficiency in the arts and law; and those specific to each discipline. This may include working in private practice as a solicitor or barrister, in government departments, non-government agencies, legal organisations or careers in the media, public relations and creative industries.The Bachelor of Laws fulfils the academic requirements to practise law in Australia. Professional admission authorities also require law graduates of all universities to complete practical legal training or similar to practise as a lawyer.Applicants who do not have the required entry mark for this double degree are encouraged to apply for the Bachelor of Arts. If a student achieves the required grade point average during that course, they may then apply for transfer into the double degree.

The subject was formerly known as PICX860 Geopolitics and Geostrategy
The international security order is in a period of rapid transformation. This subject examines the major global geopolitical trends, including in the Indo-Pacific, the greater Middle East, Europe, as well as Latin America and Africa. It also analyses the influence of those dynamics on the geostrategies of key countries. Aside from exposing students to the concept of geopolitics as an analytical instrument, the subject will deal with a series of case studies, including the evolving US-Sino rivalry; the Sino-India great power game; the geopolitics of Southeast Asia; the rise of Iran, and the emerging roles of Saudi Arabia and Turkey; the question of the re-emergence of Russia and Germany as great powers; and the Subjected Kingdom in times of Brexit. The subject will provide students with in-depth understanding about the key contemporary global geostrategic dynamics and the implications for regional and international stability.

The Geopolitics of Asia

For many commentators, the end of the Cold War heralded the impending triumph of democratic governance on a global scale. A quarter century later, optimism has given way to pessimism. This course seeks to explain why democratisation has often failed to produce durable democratic institutions. How have authoritarian regimes responded to the challenges posed by pro-democracy uprisings and Western democracy promotion? Does democratisation resolve or exacerbate ethnic conflict? How is the success of democratisation influenced by the nature of institutions like the military, the judiciary, political parties and the media? Is culture or religion an obstacle to democracy? Drawing on case studies from regions such as Latin America, Eastern Europe and Asia, this course answers these and other questions as it introduces students to key concepts and debates in scholarship on democratisation and the new authoritarianism.This is a level 2 subject. Democracy in Retreat? Failed Transitions and the New Authoritarianism

Introduction to Global Studies offers a series of seminars that introduce incoming students enrolled in the Bachelor of Global Studies to key concepts in Global Politics. These seminars will prompt you to think about your own role in the world and the complex processes that shape global politics, and will provide the foundations for your Bachelor of Global Studies. You will explore key themes that underpin the study of global politics including colonisation, power, politics, visual representations, conflict, cooperation, inequality, gender, change, and waste. This course will also give you an opportunity to work in small groups, research together current global events that you find particularly interesting, and present your findings back to the rest of the cohort.This is a level 1 subject and includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Introduction To Global Studies

This subject was previously known as Power, Politics and the Internet The Internet has had a massive impact on our political systems, from grassroots activism through to global politics. This subject helps you to understand how and why this has happened, and why it matters. It explores the new challenges and possibilities for governance created by the Internet, as well as attempts to control the Internet by governments and others. Ultimately, you will come to understand how networked communications are intertwined with long-running political struggles around control and resistance. Online Power and Resistance

This subject explores cybersecurity as it is managed in the business context. It covers the processes of threat and risk analysis, security policy development, incident prevention and response, issues around privacy, professional codes of conduct, and looks at legislative efforts around the world intended to address privacy and cybersecurity issues. It also looks at the ethical issues that cybersecurity raises, and the ways that this affects how cybersecurity practitioners can operate.Completing this subject will provide you with the opportunity to obtain the Fortinet Cybersecurity Awareness and Technical (NSE 1–3) professional industry certification.

Introduction to Cybersecurity Policies and Practices

This subject examines the effect of policies and systems on the societal impact of dementia, and the effective provision of support, services and resources to people with dementia and the people who care for them, including approaches enabling independent living and optimum health. National approaches to dementia care and health system design are compared and contrasted with respect to current and anticipated needs and financial impact. Students study four modules and a choice of applied modules to tailor their learning to particular interests. Assessments are both online for the content modules, and in the form of written assignments enabling the student to relate the course material to their individual professional and/or personal context.
