The Undergraduate Certificate in Teaching Education Studies is designed for people who are interested in pursuing a career in early childhood or primary education and gives the student entry (and credit for the four subjects completed) into the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) or (Primary) degree at Curtin. You will explore the world of child development, the use of technology in the classroom for younger school-aged learners, and explore emerging literacy. This course will also examine some of the issues and trends that impact on teaching and schooling.

Study 4 core subjects in teaching children—and get entry and credit in Curtin’s Bachelor Degree. Topics include language, literacy, and curriculum. Start thinking about your career as a professional early childhood or primary educator.

Undergraduate Certificate in Teaching Education Studies

The Bachelor of Education (Primary) has been designed for people seeking to attain an Initial Teacher Education qualification in order to register as a teacher in Australia and any other countries that recognise an Australian teaching qualification. Specifically, this degree provides a qualification for those intending to teach children at the primary level of education.Students will develop advanced critical skills, knowledge and understanding concerning best practice in education and in meeting the needs of children. Students will have four opportunities to engage in professional experience in schools, culminating in a final professional placement of a block one full school term.Subject content includes digital literacy, planning lessons, assessment, classroom management and understanding diverse student needs.Please note that this course is only available to applicants who are residing in Australia for the duration of their degree. As this course doesn’t hold CRICOS registration international students on a Student VISA are not permitted to undertake this course.

International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme

This subject is one of a set of 3 undergraduate option units to prepare Initial Teacher Educators (ITE) to specialise in teaching literacy and English. This subject introduces a range of literary texts applicable to students from Foundation to Year 10, including: short stories, novels, poetry, prose, plays, film and multimodal texts, in spoken, print and digital online form. The subject explores how texts reflect the historical and socio-cultural context of their creation and how different readers respond to them through the lenses of their own personal and socio-cultural context. The text–to-life and life-to-text significance of literature will be explored. In addition to the analysis of linguistic, literary and multimodal devices available to authors, students will investigate how these devices are applied in the process of textual creation. A diverse range of texts, valued for their aesthetic, social and cultural significance, will be at the heart of the subject and will include literature spanning from Australia (including the oral traditions and written texts of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders); Asia and the world, as well as sustainability. The subject will explore the dynamic, constantly evolving and polysemic nature of genres of literature.
The expectation is that students will have completed two mandatory (non-option) subjects in English/Literacy before taking this subject.

Learn to engage students with texts in the classroom. Cover what both written and visual texts can teach students about the time periods and contexts they were created in. Discover how different students may interpret texts based on their own lives.

Creating and Responding to Literature

This unit builds on the work covered in the previous International Baccalaureate units. It addresses the values of the teacher award schemes and the Domains of Knowledge relating to the International Baccalaureate Primary and Middle Years Programme. The focus is on student examining their own professional practice based on the Domains of Knowledge. This subject provides an overview to the key theories and principles relating to the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme and International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. There is a focus on the fundamental concepts, learner profile and holistic learning.
