This degree, offered by the Autism Centre of Excellence, applies a multi-disciplinary, whole-of-life focus to autism. Our approach aligns with the neurodiversity paradigm, and we incorporate the voices of autistic and autism community in each of our courses. The course uses the lecturer content with the voices of lived experience to allow you to gain a foundation in communication and learning in autism, understand how to select and apply evidence-based practices and explore different factors and pathways to understanding and supporting behavioural challenges. This Graduate Certificate in Autism Studies is a prerequisite for the Master of Autism Studies, which is an accredited pathway to becoming a developmental educator. Developmental educators are NDIS-approved professionals who support individuals on the autism spectrum, those with other disabilities, and their families to achieve their individual developmental, social and learning goals.The introduction and overview of autism provided in this graduate certificate covers understanding and supporting behaviours, evidence for interventions, and the changes that have occurred in understanding of ASD over time, creating positive learning environments. This subject explores historical and current case studies of creative arts practitioners from a range of cultural contexts living with physical or mental illness and the ways this is reflected or subsumed in their work. This engagement with creative work provides valuable perspective on lived experience and insights into the impacts of acquired or congenital disability or illness on the creative process and the impacts of the arts on health and wellbeing of individuals. The subject will draw on perspectives and literature of Health Humanities that reinforce empathy in engagement with people experiencing physical or mental illness and promotes patient-centred care and can underpin and enhance a current or future role in planning or delivery of arts programs in healthcare settings and the community.

Perspectives of the Arts on Health and Wellbeing

As Australia’s population ages and awareness of the types and impacts of disability increases, the ability to analyse and critique commonly held assumptions and perceptions about disability and ageing is of critical importance, particularly for people working in community services and social work settings. In this subject you will explore the foundational theoretical frameworks that underpin our understanding of traditional concepts of disability and ageing, and consider alternative perspectives. Reflecting on your personal experiences and examining the divergence and convergence of concepts of ageing and disability, you will have opportunities to enhance your reflective skills and ability to comprehend what disability and/or ageing might mean for individuals, groups and communities. Applying a social lens and person-centered framework to your practice, the subject will help you to understand social worker roles within different organisational contexts.
