Health and Wellbeing in Social and Cultural Contexts

In this subject, you will explore autism, covering a combination of scientific/research, lived experience, and applied perspectives. You will explore the changing views on autism, from the first proposed accounts to contemporary understandings. You will consider the different presentations of autism, Autistic people&#39;s lived experiences, and the different support needs of Autistic people and their families across the lifespan – from very early infancy, through childhood and adolescence, and into adulthood. You will develop broad knowledge of autism, including the early signs, diagnostic criteria and tools, and a range of supports for different needs and life stages. You will explore attitudes and perspectives on autism, locally and abroad, including community perspectives, media representation, and government policy. You will develop essential skills for critically evaluating the wealth of information on autism and the ability to communicate evidence-based information on autism to varied audiences.

Understanding and Support for Autism

In this subject, you will develop intermediate levels of communicative competence in Auslan in the areas of both receptive and production skills. You will look at differences and similarities in both Auslan and English, and will also discuss current and past medical approaches and challenges had by the deaf community. This is a level 2 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Australian Sign Language 2A

In this subject, you will continue to develop practical abilities in both receptive and production skills in Auslan to a level of basic communicative competence. You will be introduced to key grammatical structures of Auslan and the use of the language in its appropriate cultural, social context and begin to understand the history of Auslan and the deaf community. Culture is embedded throughout language, so learning another language develops your intercultural communication skills, preparing you to be responsive and agile in varied situations.This is a level 1 subject. Please note the prerequisite requirement for enrolling in this subject. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
