Australian Aboriginal Art

This subject investigates culture, communication and representation. We examine the complexity of culture and our engagement with other cultures and culturally diverse thinking and perspectives. As part of this, we explore Indigenous cultures, histories, knowledge, perspectives and values. The unit also explores the relationship between media and culture, critically analysing media representations that inform our ideas about particular topics, other cultures and people. Decolonising Place

This subject was previously known as Classic Texts.This subject explores the complex relation between culture, historical context and modes of representation. Through studying a range of cultural texts, it will consider why and how different narrative forms and generic conventions in fiction and non-fiction narrative emerge, endure and transform across time and space. This subject examines the relationship between language and culture and explores the different varieties of language and dialects, as well as the various styles and registers that can exist within any one language. The subject explores theories of language and language learning, including transcultural communication, to enhance the ability and confidence of teachers to work successfully in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms. Specific reference will be made to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages and dialects as well as people learning English as an additional language.

This subject was previously known as Beginning Japanese. This subject introduces basic communicative skills in Japanese at an elementary level. Students acquire the four essential language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing characters (Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji) through ample practice in communicative activities supported by digital technology. Japanese for Beginners

This subject is suitable for students with no or very limited experience in foreign language learning and is designed to support the learning needs of a university student with no or very limited knowledge of the Korean language. With a focus on supportive and scaffolded approach to language learning, this unit will introduce students to basic written and spoken Korean communication skills needed in daily life in Korea. On successful completion of this subject students will be able to master basic communication skills required when travelling or working in Korea, such as greetings, introductions, talking about past events, asking and giving permission as well as asking and giving directions. Students will also be introduced to the Korean writing system hangeul, and learn skills in writing basic emails, text messages and SMS messages in Korean while learning about Korean society, culture and history to contextualise their learning.On successful completion of Korean Beginners 1 and 2, students will reach a level of competency equivalent to the National Institute of Korean Language’s Standard Curriculum for Korean Language TOPIK-I Level 2 lower level proficiency.Korean language study is highly recommended for students planning a career in engineering, science, commerce, international relations, creative arts or teaching. This subject was previously known as Beginning Japanese Developing.This subject covers both written and spoken Japanese at an introductory level that builds on prior knowledge gained in Beginning Japanese. A communication-oriented approach is used to help students develop confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing Standard Japanese so that they will be able to interact with speakers of Japanese in simple day-to-day situations.
