The Undergraduate Certificate in English and Cultural Studies is designed for people who are interested in pursuing a career in English and Cultural Studies. The Undergraduate Certificate may enable entry (and credit for the four units completed) into the English and Cultural Studies major within the Bachelor of Arts among others at Curtin.

Work towards your degree with this head start in humanities. You’ll explore how cultures write about themselves in the past and present, through fiction and nonfiction texts. Topics include gender, power, feminism, and queer theory.

In this subject students will engage with critical race theory and the history of Western expansion through concepts of colonialism, modernity and globalisation. Students will investigate key texts in literature, film and theory to explore the distribution of political and economic power in the specific places in the world throughout history. Decolonising Place

This subject was previously known as Classic Texts.This subject explores the complex relation between culture, historical context and modes of representation. Through studying a range of cultural texts, it will consider why and how different narrative forms and generic conventions in fiction and non-fiction narrative emerge, endure and transform across time and space. This subject examines key concepts, approaches and debates in the study of gender and sexuality, with a focus on analysing the representation of gender and sexuality in a range of literary and cultural texts. Recent theoretical developments are explored in the context of pioneering work in second- and third-wave feminism, psychoanalysis and queer theory. This subject explores different textual representations of the future in terms of the questions they raise about the world today. From science fiction and dystopian classics, through futurology and trends forecasting, to climate change narratives and extinction studies, students will engage with a variety of texts and discourses engaging in the question of the future.
