The Diploma of Ageing Studies and Services addresses the need for holistic knowledge of the ageing process. The Diploma will cover contemporary issues relating to care and services for older people. This Diploma is suitable for those wanting to or who are working with older adults in aged care, health care or related sectors, such as community-based roles and services. The course will bring together the social and health-based perspectives of ageing.Areas of focus include the idea of &#39;care navigation&#39;, policy, safety and health promotion. Content also looks at the rising impact of dementia.

In this subject, you will first be introduced to concepts fundamental to the understanding of Human Physiology such as the organisation of the human body, homeostasis, basic cell structure and function, body fluids and the movement of molecules within body fluid compartments. The basics of nervous system and endocrine system function in the context of physiological regulation and homeostasis will then be explored. This information will provide the foundation for the study of major organ systems of the body including the muscular, digestive, cardiovascular, immune, respiratory, renal, and reproductive systems. This subject will also include content on metabolism of nutrients and acid-base homeostasis.

Map the complex architecture of the human body and learn how it’s organised and structured. Navigate the journey of the smallest cell to the largest organ. Observe how the body performs and adapts, responding to stress and disease to maintain life.

This subject provides an introduction to health psychology in the Australian context. This subject serves as an introduction to the human body and key organ systems. It begins with anatomical terminology and the relationships between body cells, tissues and organs. Key cell processes such as respiration, protein synthesis, and cell division will be covered. Students will then explore the basic function and control of the circulatory, respiratory, digestive and excretory systems, and how these systems contribute to the changing needs of the human body. The subject includes exploration of the lymphatic and immune systems and how they provide defence against microorganisms. In this subject you will study the major food sources, functions and metabolism of macro-nutrients (protein, fat and carbohydrate), alcohol, and micro-nutrients (vitamins and minerals) and be aware of the consequences of over and under-nutrition. Principles of energy balance (energy intake and energy expenditure), basic techniques for assessment of nutrient adequacy of individual diets and simple techniques for assessing body composition in adults will be explored. You will also be introduced to the Australian Dietary Guidelines and Nutrient Reference Values, and the use of food guides in assessing the diets of populations.

Evidence Based Pharmacotherapeutic Practice

In this subject you will be introduced to foundational concepts of pharmacist roles and responsibilities within the context of ethical and safe professional practice within the Australian health care system. You will begin using core online pharmacy resources to introduce clinical and critical thinking skills. You will also learn about Tasmanian Aboriginal history and culture, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s health status and culture. In addition, you will learn about health of other populations including culturally and linguistically diverse people and people from the LGBTQIA+ community.

Counselling and Advice on Medicines focusses on patient-centred care with patient counselling concepts and application of communication skills in clinical scenarios. Advancements in Comprehensive Wound Care

Wound care and infection prevention is a rapidly growing clinical area leading the way for tissue management, infection control, diagnosis, and assessment of critical issues in wound management.  Technologies such as digital, e-health and app-based sources are being rapidly absorbed into clinical practice. With a growing plethora of advanced wound therapies such as interactive dressings, tissue substitutes, and negative pressure wound therapy there are many tools in the clinician’s armamentarium for wound prevention and management.  This unit will investigate contemporary wound management therapies and the role of the digital technologies for wound management. The unit will also investigate the different types of advanced healing therapies, dressings, and devices available for clinical use and critically evaluate the evidence and clinical utility in specific health care settings and regions with a patient centric focus.  Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online.
