This articulated suite of courses aims to provide health professionals with advanced knowledge and skills to deliver quality education in health service settings. Clinical education is characterised by a symbiotic relationship between the learner, an experienced clinical educator and the health service.
These courses are a cornerstone for developing and retaining a well-trained and supervised clinician workforce with the help of skilled clinical educators who are committed to excellence in professional development.
They are specifically designed for a variety of health professionals involved in professional development, mentoring or clinical education at undergraduate and post-graduate levels without formal qualifications in education.
The courses are designed to provide you with an understanding of foundational principles of symbiotic clinical education, the ability to demonstrate advanced and applied knowledge and skills in clinical education, and the opportunity to contribute to this specialist body of knowledge by undertaking a significant piece of educational research.
It is 1 year in length on a full-time basis and can also be undertaken part-time.

This subject includes a basic overview of approaches, methods, and techniques used in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). It focuses on developing successful classroom practices that address the learning needs and interests of culturally diverse and language minority students. Students in this subject will have the opportunity to apply what has been discussed in the workshops to hands-on teaching practices and detailed lesson planning.

Gain an overview of the approaches and methods used in teaching English to non-native speakers. Develop classroom techniques that address the needs of culturally diverse students to improve your teaching practices and detailed lesson planning.

MTC610 Professional Experience 4: Transition into the Profession must be completed in the final study period of enrolment in the degree. Students are responsible for ensuring they enrol correctly and clearance to commence the final placement will only be given to students who are undertaking the final subject/s of their degree. Students will need to contact Curtin at Professional.Experience@curtin.edu.au requesting permission. Once we have confirmation that the student has satisfied the above requirements, then the restriction will be lifted.This final subject in the suite of professional experience subjects and includes both a theory and a practical component. For the first assessment, students will identify personal professional strengths and areas for improvement and/or growth through reflective practice, and develop strategies for professional development and teacher resilience. Students will then be provided with the opportunity to exercise professional skills, knowledge and attitudes in a school setting that demonstrate teacher competence and readiness. Students will undertake a five–week, full-time, continuous, block placement or internship under the supervision of a mentor teacher, and will be required to demonstrate meeting all the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Career stage. During the internship, students will complete a theoretical assessment known as a Teaching Performance Assessment. Both the professional experience placement and the Teaching Performance Assessment must be undertaken together and passed in order to pass the subject. Professional Experience 4: Transition into the Profession

This subject examines the social, political, cultural, historical and economic shape of Australian society and the impact of these forces on education policy, classroom practices and student learning. Pre-service teachers examine the characteristics of education systems and learning settings that promote inclusivity, celebrate diversity and reduce the effects of disadvantage and inequality. Schooling and Australian Society

This course is an introduction to the field of Positive Education exploring topics related to positive thinking, values, character strengths, resilience, mindfulness and the concept of social and emotional learning programs. It is designed for leaders in schools who wish to evaluate and strengthen established programs or implement new ones. The unit will familiarise students with the fields of Positive Education and Positive Psychology in the context of contemporary schooling. Participants will draw on theoretical literature across both areas to critically evaluate current programs in school settings and apply theoretical knowledge to develop programs in their own school context.

Positive Education: Wellbeing and Student Achievement

Situated in the context of theory and research, this subject provides an overview of typical and atypical development from conception to adulthood across physical, cognitive, social and emotional domains. Biological and environmental influences on development are examined. Major theories relating to how learning occurs are examined and appraised. Implications for contemporary educators are explored with a focus on optimising developmental and learning outcomes to support the full participation of a diverse range of learners. In addition to its emphasis on knowing your students and how they learn, this subject focuses on effective engagement and interaction with parents/carers and communities. Gain a broad overview of typical and atypical development from birth to adolescence. Explore the physical, cognitive, social and emotional domains via the behaviourism, humanism, cognitivism and constructivism theoretical perspectives.

Theories of Development and Learning

This is the first in the suite of three English subjects in the Master of Teaching. The focus of this subject is on an in-depth understanding of what reading entails and the characteristics of the good reader. Theories and practices of reading will be situated in the context of broader perspectives of literacy and language. Students will learn and understand the multiple components of reading to inform the comprehensive identification of children’s skills as readers at various stages of their development. Introduction to English: Reading

This subject introduces the various component systems of language as a basis for conceptualising and describing language variation in education. These concepts are also applied to students’ individual needs and experience as they relate to current theories of first and second language acquisition and instruction.

This subject examines literacy and numeracy as a dynamic, evolving, social, and cultural construct. It focuses on identifying and understanding the literacy and numeracy demands and conventions in all learning areas, predominantly in subjects other than English and Mathematics. This subject will provide an overview of local and international, historical and philosophical perspectives that have influenced contemporary Australian early childhood education and care contexts. Their impact on early childhood education and care and its leadership and management will be critically examined. The subject affords the opportunity to explore and critique policy and procedure development in the light of current legislative and accountability requirements.
