This course is designed for people seeking to attain an Initial Teacher Education qualification in order to register as a teacher in Western Australia. Students will develop advanced critical skills, knowledge and understanding concerning best practice in education and in meeting the needs of 21st century learners. The course provides a grounding in theoretical and practical aspects of teaching and offers 45 days of professional experience in schools. Students who complete the requirements for the Graduate Diploma in Education in Primary are able to articulate into the Master of Teaching program.The Graduate Diploma in Education (Primary) will be chosen by those who wish to teach in Years 1 - 6 in Primary Schools and will provide a foundation for teaching across the primary curriculum. Students entering this course will hold a degree in a ﻿discipline that contains content relevant to the Australian Curriculum in the primary years. Students will complete 45 days of professional experience placements in a range of schools and across a range of year levels.

This subject examines the social, political, cultural, historical and economic shape of Australian society and the impact of these forces on education policy, classroom practices and student learning. Pre-service teachers examine the characteristics of education systems and learning settings that promote inclusivity, celebrate diversity and reduce the effects of disadvantage and inequality. Schooling and Australian Society

Situated in the context of theory and research, this subject provides an overview of typical and atypical development from conception to adulthood across physical, cognitive, social and emotional domains. Biological and environmental influences on development are examined. Major theories relating to how learning occurs are examined and appraised. Implications for contemporary educators are explored with a focus on optimising developmental and learning outcomes to support the full participation of a diverse range of learners. In addition to its emphasis on knowing your students and how they learn, this subject focuses on effective engagement and interaction with parents/carers and communities. Theories of Development and Learning

This is the first in the suite of three English subjects in the Master of Teaching. The focus of this subject is on an in-depth understanding of what reading entails and the characteristics of the good reader. Theories and practices of reading will be situated in the context of broader perspectives of literacy and language. Students will learn and understand the multiple components of reading to inform the comprehensive identification of children’s skills as readers at various stages of their development. This subject was previously known as Quantitative Mathematics for Science Inquiry.This subject will focus on methods of data collection, analysis and presentation, traversing curriculum areas which include mathematics and science. Statistics for Educators

This subject focuses on creating and maintaining supportive, inclusive and welcoming learning environments. It explores positive and effective strategies for helping children manage their own behaviour, including ways in which the physical environment can be optimised for children’s learning, wellbeing and safety. Strategies for building and maintaining relationships with and between children will be explored. Learn how to create and maintain environments that fosters children’s learning and relationships. Examine health and wellbeing, challenging behaviours, children’s rights, professional ethics and maintaining partnerships with families and community.

Developing Positive Learning Environments

This subject builds on the knowledge of pedagogies appropriate for teaching primary mathematics that students acquired in EMT521 Teaching Primary Mathematics 1. The second subject in the sequence, EMT620 broadens students understanding of mathematics pedagogy by addressing the content and practices not covered in the initial subject. This subject will model and provide opportunities for students to engage with best pedagogical practice by undertaking rich tasks, group work, and problem solving, as well as differentiating and integrating the curriculum. Students will enhance their understanding of appropriate pedagogies for teaching mathematics and their knowledge of relevant curricula, the development of students&#39; thinking in each of the strands of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics, and the relationship of content knowledge to pedagogy. It will provide pre-service teachers with opportunities to assess primary students&#39; mathematical thinking using work samples and to develop their skills in planning for teaching based on this information.

Teaching Primary Mathematics 2

Internship/PlacementThe second Professional Experience (PE2) provides pre-service teachers the opportunity to become familiar with the school context. PE2 primarily involves active observation, discussions with the supervising teacher and initial school experiences. Throughout the placement pre-service teachers are required to maintain professional files, which contain observations, policy documents, teaching resources and personal reflections on their own experience. Professional Experience 2 (Primary)

The subject aims to promote awareness of the importance of Health and Physical Education (HPE) in the curriculum from a generalist teacher&#39;s perspective, and provide confidence in teaching its concepts at a primary school level. It seeks to prepare primary school pre-service teachers to teach generalist level physical education and other physical activities to primary school children. It also aims to prepare primary school pre-service teachers to teach health education and health promotion to children, parents, staff and the wider school community whilst giving pre-service teachers knowledge of and developing their capacity to discuss and analyse contemporary aspects of health and wellbeing; as well as an ability to work with others who may have health and well-being issues. Evidence-based sources will be used to develop knowledge of the physical, social, emotional, spiritual and interpersonal dimensions and will be applied to a range of topics covered in the health and physical education curriculum, for example: drugs, resilience, nutrition and safety issues. The interpersonal skills of communication and conflict resolution will also be developed. National, state and local perspectives relating to the focus, structure and content of HPE will also be critically examined.Skills that are emphasised in this subject are those that have been identified by the Teachers Registration Board (TRB), the ACARA HPE curriculum, as well as national teaching bodies, as important by the time you graduate with your teaching degree. These include demonstrating aspects of professional knowledge, professional relationships and professional practice.

Personal Development & HPE

Professional Experience 3 (Primary)

Children encounter a wide range of texts in their lives. They are expected to read and interpret these texts, and to create their own. An emphasis of study in this subject will be on notions of socio-cultural contexts and their impact on the ways different text types or genres construct meanings; the manner in which texts vary with respect to field, tenor and mode, the features of written texts, and the teaching of text types and grammar.  The subject will also involve the investigation of children’s literature, with a deep study of picture books, the most prevalent literary form found in K-6 classrooms.
