About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics of students and how these may affect learning (GTSD 1.1.1);
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of strategies for differentiating teaching and ensuring student safety to support inclusive student participation and engagement by meeting the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities, including gifted and talented (GTSD 1.5.1, 3.1.1, 4.1.1, 4.5.1, 5.4.1);
- demonstrate a range of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to support student engagement (GTSD 3.5.1);
- demonstrate knowledge of practical approaches to manage challenging behaviour (GTSD 4.3.1);
- demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of legislative requirements and teaching strategies that support participation and learning of students with disability (GTSD 1.6.1); and
- demonstrate competence during professional placement in a school setting (GTSD 2.3.1, 4.3.1, 5.1.1, 6.3.1).
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
As a primary school teacher, you are likely to encounter a wide range of students with differing and specific learning needs; including students who experience learning difficulties, and gifted and talented students. This development subject investigates the strategies you need to teach in multi-level classrooms (multi-ability and multi-grade/stage/age). You will learn how best to plan, manage and respond to challenging behaviours associated with boredom of gifted and talented students, or with common disabilities and disorders that may affect your students Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention deficit disorder(ADD) and Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD), Oppositional defiant disorder(ODD), Compulsive disorder(CD), Anxiety and Depression. You will learn how to identify the characteristics of each disorder, and plan and manage lessons in order to promote student engagement in a positive mainstream classroom. You will complete 20 days of professional experience in a primary school.
Assessment 1: Written Assessment: 2000 words (equivalent). Relates to Learning Outcomes 1, 3, 4;
Assessment 2: Lesson Plan: 2000 words. Relates to Learning Outcomes 2, 5;
Assessment 3: Professional Experience: 20 days. Students are required to complete 20 days of school-based professional experience in an Australian School and receive a satisfactory report from their supervisor(s) in order to successfully pass this unit. Relates to Learning Outcome 6.- Assessment 1 - Written Assessment (50%)

- Placement requirements - This subject requires contact with children in an educational setting. Before entering the setting all students must have completed online Anaphylaxis training, an online Child Protection module, and have obtained a valid NSW Working with Children Check clearance (for those students wishing to complete their placement in NSW) or equivalent (for those students wishing to complete their placement outside NSW). This subject addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).
