About this subject

• What you'll learn

  Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of foundational theories of how children learn (GTSD 1.2.1);
  2. formulate, apply, and evaluate strategies and principles for effective pedagogy, assessment (including moderation), and inclusion. (GTSD 1.3.1, 3.1.1, 3.3.1, 5.1.1, 5.3.1);
  3. create quality learning environments and positive classroom behaviour, including a range of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies (GTSD 3.5.1, 4.2.1, 4.3.1);
  4. apply practical approaches for fostering positive relationships with students and positive classroom management, taking into account students’ diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds (GTSD 1.3.1, 4.3.1);
  5. demonstrate an understanding of the role of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and the need to engage with constructive feedback from supervisors and teachers to improve teaching practices. (GTSD 6.1.1, 6.3.1); and
  6. demonstrate competence during professional placement in a primary school setting (GTSD 3.3.1, 4.2.1, 6.3.1).

Entry requirements

Part of a degree

To enrol in this subject you must be accepted into one of the following degrees:

• UNE-SPE-DEG-2024 - Bachelor of Special and Inclusive Education (Primary)

Additional requirements

• Equipment requirements - Headphones or speakers (required to listen to lectures and other media). Headset, including microphone (highly recommended). Webcam (may be required for participation in virtual classrooms and/or media presentations).
• Placement requirements - This subject requires contact with children in an educational setting. Before entering the setting all students must have completed online Anaphylaxis training, an online Child Protection module, and have obtained a valid NSW Working with Children Check clearance (for those students wishing to complete their placement in NSW) or equivalent check (for those students wishing to complete their placement outside NSW). Please see the Office for Professional Learning Important Information webpage for more information. Placements are completed during dates designated by the School of Education and published by The Office for Professional Learning on the OPL's Moodle PREXUS site. This subject addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).
• Software requirements - It is essential for students to have reliable internet access in order to participate in and complete your units, regardless of whether they contain an on campus attendance or intensive school component.
