About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of legislative requirements, principles and policies that support participation and learning of students across the full range of abilities, development and cultural backgrounds with reference to the principles of codes of ethics and conduct (GTSD 1.6.1, 7.1.1, 7.2.1);
- demonstrate an understanding of capabilities for learning (thinking, social interaction, language and literacies, and self-management) and how these may affect achievement for students who experience disability or learning difficulties (GTSD 1.1.1, 1.2.1);
- justify the application of teaching strategies to maintain a safe learning environment that supports full participation and engagement in activities, safety, wellbeing and mental health for all students, and explicitly teaches for sound literacy and numeracy learning for all students across the full range of abilities (GTSD 1.6.1, 2.5.1, 4.1.1, 4.3.1, 4.4.1, 5.4.1);
- demonstrate awareness of models and research that inform differentiated teaching, with focuses on disability, learning difficulties, and cultural diversity (GTSD 1.5.1, 2.5.1, 3.4.1, 6.2.1);
- demonstrate a professional understanding of individual support cycles, services and resources available to teachers of students with special needs including students from different cultural backgrounds (including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) and strategies for collaborating with parents, caregivers and other professionals (GTSD 1.4.1, 3.7.1, 5.5.1, 7.3.1, 7.4.1); and
- demonstrate competence during professional placement in a school setting, including the satisfactory completion of a Teaching Performance Assessment aligned to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate level (GTSD 3.1.1, 3.2.1, 4.3.1, 5.5.1, 6.3.1).
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
Educators are required to ensure that their classrooms are inclusive environments. Integrate your knowledge in this capstone subject which aims to strengthen your understanding of educational strategies that provide effective teaching for students with disabilities or learning difficulties. As part of this subject you will complete the mandatory special and inclusive education content required for teachers employed in public schools (in NSW). This subject includes 35 days of professional experience after which you will be able to demonstrate your ability to meet the Graduate Teacher Standards.
Assessment 1: Written task. 2000 words (equivalent). Relates to GTSD: 1.1.1, 1.2.1, 1.4.1, 1.5.1, 1.6.1, 2.5.1, 3.1.1, 3.2.1, 3.4.1, 3.7.1, 4.1.1, 4.4.1, 5.4.1, 5.5.1, 6.2.1, 6.3.1, 7.1.1, 7.2.1, 7.3.1, 7.4.1. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-6;
Assessment 2: Practical- Professional Experience. All students will undertake their professional experience as a 35-day block in a Primary School setting. As part of this final placement students will complete their Graduate Teaching Performance Assessment (GTPA) (as per PS 1.2). Relates to GTSD: 3.1.1, 3.2.1, 4.3.1, 5.5.1, 6.3.1. Relates to Learning Outcomes 6;
Assessment 3: Assignment – Graduate Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA): Students are required to successfully complete the TPA in order to successfully pass this unit, and to graduate. 5000 words. Relates to GTSD: 1.1.1-7.4.1 depending on context. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-6.- Written Task - 2000 words (equivalent) (50%)
- Graduate Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA): Students are required to successfully complete the TPA in order to successfully pass this unit, and to graduate. 5000 words. (50%)
- All students will undertake their professional experience as a 35-day block in a Primary School setting. As part of this final placement students will complete their Graduate Teaching Performance Assessment (GTPA).

Additional requirements
- Equipment requirements - Headphones or speakers (required to listen to lectures and other media). Headset, including microphone (highly recommended). Webcam (may be required for participation in virtual classrooms and/or media presentations).
- Placement requirements - All students will undertake their professional experience as a 35-day block in a Primary School setting. As part of this final placement students will complete their Graduate Teaching Performance Assessment (GTPA) (as per PS 1.2). This subject requires contact with children in an educational setting. Before entering the setting all students must have completed online Anaphylaxis training, an online Child Protection module, have obtained a valid NSW Working with Children Check clearance (for those students wishing to complete their placement in NSW) or equivalent (for those students wishing to complete their placement outside NSW), and have completed and passed their Literacy and Numeracy test. Please see the Office for Professional Learning webpage for more information. This subject addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD). Students are unable to begin placement until the 9th week of Teaching for the Trimester in which they are enrolled. Specific dates are published in the PREXUS Moodle site. This requirement cannot be adjusted due to conditions imposed for accreditation. Before enrolling in this subject students must have completed the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) students and all prior placements. The professional experience includes the mandated Graduate Teaching Performance Assessment, and can only be attempted in the final year of candidature. Students must have submitted all required work associated with this subject before beginning the placement. Please note, if you are completing this subject in Trimester 3, this requirement means that you will not be able to commence your placement until Term 1 of school in the following year.
