Creative Music Production
About this subject
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- critically listen to and interpret sound events including commonly encountered audio effects such as compression, equalisation, distortion and time-based effects;
- critically analyse the use of music production technologies in sound recordings;
- demonstrate practical skill and technical knowledge of music recording, editing, mixing and processing for creative music making;
- demonstrate practical skill of music recording, editing, mixing and processing for creative music making; and
- demonstrate practical skill and technical proficiency in the use of industry relevant digital audio workstation software.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
This subject helps prepare you for a future as a professional musician. You will do an in depth study of the creative and technical principles employed in contemporary music recording and production studios. You will gain an understanding of recording studio technologies including mixers, compressors, equalisers, microphones and monitors using industry-standard digital software tools. You will learn how to record instruments and vocals and gain a practical and conceptual understanding of recording and mixing processes through a variety of applied and analytical exercises. Sound recording and production techniques of specific artists, audio engineers, and music producers will be critically analysed and deconstructed into their component techniques. You will also progress through a series of critical listening exercises which train and test your ability to interpret sound events including: compression, equalisation, distortion and time-based effects.
Assessment 1: Music recording and production exercise; 1600 words (equivalent). Relates to Learing Outcomes 1-4;
Assessment 2: Audio production project and written evalutaiton; 3500 words (equivalent). Relates to Learing Outcomes 1-5;
Unit Quizzes: 500 words (equivalent). Relates to Learning Outocmes 1-3.- Unit Quizzes (20%)

- Software requirements - It is essential for students to have reliable internet access in order to participate in and complete your units, regardless of whether they contain an on campus attendance or intensive school component. The Unit Coordinator will advise students on suitable software choices, but students are responsible for the final selection and installation of software on their personal computers or mobile computing devices dependent on their personal circumstances. Specific software titles can not be confirmed at this time as new software is constantly being developed in this terrain. No software is required to be purchased or installed on university computers (except for the computers of teaching staff) as this unit will be run in an entirely online mode of delivery. If students are required to purchase any software for the unit, they will be advised of the requirements in the Course and Unit Catalogue prior to enrolment.
