About this subject
On successful completion of the subject, students should be able to:
- Understand and describe a variety of evidence-based routine wound cleansing methods
- Understand and describe methods of debridement
- Describe the difference between using Aseptic Non-Touch Technique (ANTT®), aseptic versus clean technique and evaluate evidence-based approaches to determining which technique to use
- Understand the physiology of scars and critically analyse and evaluate methods of scar manaagement
- Understand and describe the difference and relationship between infection, inflammation and biofilms and the management of these wounds.
- Wound cleansing methods – theory and practice
- Debridement methods, indications, and scope of practice
- Selecting the correct technique for cleansing a variety of wounds for different wound healing goals in a variety of healthcare settings
- Anatomy and physiology of the fistula wound, methods of managing fistula wounds and psychological impact on the patient
- Anatomy and physiology of scars and techniques for scar management
- The relationship between infection, inflammation and biofilms, recognition of symptoms and evidence-based management
This subject is designed to foster knowledge and understanding of the concepts and practices of routine and advanced wound therapies. Participants will develop an understanding of wound cleansing methods, debridement techniques, management of fistulas, management of scars, and management of the infected wound with consideration to inflammation and biofilms.
