About this subject
On successful completion of the subject, students should be able to:
- Interpret and articulate the anatomy and physiology of diverse wound types.
- Categorise the constituents of a thorough assessment for various types of wounds.
- Exhibit precise documentation of a wide array of wounds
- Critically assess assessment techniques for a variety of wounds within the framework of an evidence-based approach.
- Critically appraise the assessment of wounds in diverse clinical settings
- Detail the psychological ramifications experienced by individuals living with a wound.
- Anatomy and physiology of surgical wounds and surgical wound assessment
- Anatomy and physiology of pressure injuries and pressure injury wound assessment.
- Anatomy and physiology of venous, arterial and mixed leg ulcer and leg ulcer assessment.
- Anatomy and physiology of the diabetic foot and diabetic foot ulcer assessment
- Anatomy and physiology of burns, trauma wounds, flaps and grafts and assessment
- Anatomy and physiology of skin tears and lacerations and assessment.
- Anatomy and physiology of the fistula wound and methods of management.
- Psychological impact of wounds on the patient.
This subject is designed to foster knowledge and understanding of the concepts and practices of wound assessment across a variety of different wound types. Participants will develop an understanding of comprehensive assessments of surgical wounds, pressure injuries, leg ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, burns, trauma, flaps and grafts, fistulas, skin tears and lacerations. This will include an overview of the relevant anatomy and physiology, assessment and documentation using case scenarios.
