Training & development study FAQs

What is a training and development course?

A training and development course—also commonly known as learning and development or L&D—will set you up with the skills to inspire strategic learning within your workplace.

Your options for L&D study are varied. It’s possible to enrol in a learning and development degree, but you may want to upskill more quickly with a short course or single subject, either at an undergraduate or postgraduate level.

If you already work in the field, you may be interested in upskilling in L&D for a specific area, such as within health settings. Or, if you’re just starting out and interested in gaining a broader skillset, you may like to consider a more general human resources course, which will likely include learning and development subjects.

What do you learn in a training and development course?

While exact topics may differ depending on the type of training and development course you choose, you will cover areas such as:

  • How people learn and different learning styles.
  • Identifying skills gaps in a workforce.
  • Designing and implementing learning programs.
  • Mentoring and coaching leaders and employees.
  • Aligning training and development with an organisation’s strategy.
  • How to best deploy eLearning and digital technologies.
Why should I study training and development?

You will be able to motivate others in your workplace to grow professionally and help your organisation reach its strategic goals. Training and development can be a highly rewarding area to work in as you can make a real difference to the culture of a workplace and see people achieve big things.

As an L&D professional, you’ll get to work on varied projects, such as developing new training programs and modules, rolling out strategies to make your workplace more conducive to learning, and working with people to help them thrive professionally.

Why should I study training and development online?

Studying a training and development course online will allow you to gain the new skills you need while keeping up with your existing work and life commitments.

There are plenty of online learning and development courses for you to choose from, meaning you can tailor your study to your particular area of interest, from whatever location you are based.

How do I know if I’m eligible to apply for a course?

Before starting an enrolment, it’s important to read the entry requirements for your chosen course to ensure that you’re eligible to apply. If you don’t quite meet the requirements, we may be able to help you find a pathway into your course through open-entry subjects, which anyone can study.
