Library & information services study FAQs

What are library & information services studies?

Library courses typically cover the nature of information and how it’s created, organised and distributed.

Online library courses allow you to understand the discipline of librarianship. “What is that?” you ask. Well, it includes how to apply logical and rational processes to create innovative solutions for people using libraries.

Library and information studies will also empower you to make educated decisions around which technologies are best suited to the creation and organisation of information. If you’re someone who appreciates preserving information and sharing it, this could be the path for you.

Why should I study library or information management?

Studying librarianship or information management allows you to work in a field that empowers people through information. What’s more inspiring than that?

You’ll have the skills to help students research fields of study, young children develop interests through books, and the elderly maintain their levels of cognition through reading and absorbing information.

Information management can also lend itself to other fields of employment, should you decide that working in a library isn’t for you. You may end up using your acute knowledge of the delivery and storage of educational materials to work in content creation or teaching.

Why should I study librarianship or information management online?

Online study allows you to learn on your terms. Study library and information services courses online through Open Universities Australia and you’ll have the flexibility to study when, where and how it suits you.

Study after hours while you work full-time or look after your children. Listen to lectures on your morning commute. Pause to take a break. Studying online puts you in the driver's seat of study.

What can you do with a library degree?

While studying library and information services can certainly put you on the path for working as a librarian at the local library, there are a number of other areas you may end up using your skills in. From side-stepping to a different field to working your way into a niche area of librarianship, there are plenty of opportunities to align with your unique passions and goals.

You may end up working as an audiovisual librarian, legal librarian, parliamentary librarian or reference librarian. If you’re keen to work with children, there’s also the option of becoming a childrens’ librarian. Opportunities as a cataloguer, information manager or web content specialist also exist.

How do I know if I’m eligible to apply for a course?
