About this degree
At the completion of this degree students will be able to:

The Graduate Certificate in Education has been designed to provide a vehicle for postgraduate level students from a variety of disciplines to advance their knowledge and skills in the field of education.
This fully flexible program enables students to choose course content that aligns to their interests and career development aspirations, in the context of their existing experience. It covers fundamental understandings about learning and teaching in different contexts.
You can fully customise your degree by selecting from the complete list of available subjects, or you can choose from a recommended set of subjects which have been selected to strengthen your knowledge in a particular context and optimise your capacity to transition into further study in education.

If you are considering applying for entry to Curtin’s Master of Teaching, in order to qualify for registration as a school teacher, it is important to note:
·Successful completion of this degree cannot be used as the basis for entry to the Master of Teaching. You will still be required to meet all the entry requirements for that course, which include a recognised bachelor degree, non-academic entry requirements, a higher level of English proficiency and Working with Children clearances.
·You must follow the recommendations regarding subject selection in this degree to ensure you maximise your eligibility to receive credit for recognised learning, should you subsequently be admitted to the Master of Teaching.
If you are considering applying for entry to Curtin’s Master of Education it is important to note:
Successful completion of this degree cannot be used as the basis for entry to the Master of Education. You will still be required to meet all the entry requirements for that course.
Recommended study pattern

Introduction to Learning and Teaching Principles
Content focus: Foundations of learning and teaching. Explore theories of learning and development which underpin learning design; investigate the features of environments that facilitate learning and the role of technologies in effective learning and teaching; develop an appreciation of learner diversity and discover teaching approaches that cater for differences.
Student profile:You have a qualification in a discipline other than Education and want to develop your capabilities as an educator in your existing work context or discipline area.
Introduction to Early Childhood Education
Content focus: Foundations of learning and teaching for young children (aged birth to 8 years). Explore fundamental educational principles with a focus on the early childhood context.
Student profile: You have qualification in a discipline other than Education and are interested in the education of young children. You may be considering pursuing a career as an early childhood educator in a school or early learning centre. Introduction to Primary Education
Content focus: Foundations of learning and teaching for children (aged 5 to 12 years).
Explore fundamental educational principles with a focus on the primary school context.
Student profile: You have qualification in a discipline other than Education and are interested in the education of children. You may be considering pursuing a career as a primary school teacher. The standard full-time study load is two subjects per study period.

Please note that if you wish to complete your degree in one year, you will need to maintain a full-time enrolment of two subjects per study period throughout your degree. You will also need to enrol according to the recommended sequence (based on your study period of commencement).
Subjects will not generally be offered in every study period and may not be available at the time that you wish to study them. Your progression in the degree may be impacted if you do not follow the recommended sequence of enrolment. If you wish to enrol in a part-time load then please select one subject from the two listed for each study period.

Entry requirements
This is a restricted degree. Subject enrolment is only available to students admitted into this degree.
Applicants require a bachelor degree from a recognised tertiary institution.
Alternatively, applicants will be considered with:
·at least a Diploma level qualification (AQF Level 5)*; AND
·a minimum of five (5) years of relevant professional experience**
You will be required to submit evidence of your professional experience with your application, by providing:
1. CV/resume – clearly highlighting relevant work roles and experience; AND
2. Personal statementAND
3. Letter of recommendation from a professional referee – supporting your application to the degree.
If you are applying based on a qualification which is not at least a bachelor degree from a recognised tertiary institution you will also need to meet the English proficiency requirements.
Please note: If you qualify for this degree based on a VET qualification you will not meet the entry requirements for Curtin’s Master of Teaching on completion of this degree.
* qualifications at a minimum of AQF Level 5 may include (but are not limited to):

Although credit for recognised learning reduces the amount of learning required to complete a course, it does not guarantee that the course can be completed in a shorter timeframe. Subjects are not offered in all study periods and subject pre-requisites must still be met.

Credit for Recognised Learning (CRL) is assessed on individual merit and is awarded for different types of learning, for example, studies you have previously completed or for relevant work experience.
Students must be admitted to an award degree of study before lodging their completed CRL application, along with all required supporting documentation for a formal assessment.

Degree FAQs
How long does it take to finish an online degree?
That's up to you! Because we let you choose when to study online, you can actually pick up and pause study when it suits you. Many universities have a set time you need to complete your degree within. For some this is up to 10 years, and for others there is no limit.
There are some degrees that are stricter about when you can take breaks, and about how many years you can take to complete your degree. Please always check with your uni what the limits are.
As a general guide, Commonwealth supported place students have 10 years to finish their undergraduate degree through OUA, However, if you're studying with Griffith University, there's a limit of 8 years to complete your studies. If you want to take a break that lasts more than two study terms, you'll need to apply for a leave of absence. You can apply for a leave of absence for up to 12 months, as long as you complete your studies within the maximum time allowed for your degree.
If you're studying with Macquarie University, with the exception of certain degrees, there's no limit to how long you can take. But, please check with Macquarie Student Administration to be sure.
If you're studying with the University of Adelaide, you have up to 9 years to complete your undergraduate degree and graduate.
If you're studying with La Trobe University and want to take a break of minimum 1 study term, you must apply for leave of absence to avoid being inadvertently withdrawn from your degree.
Through OUA, you can study all year round, so it's possible to fast-track and finish up sooner than studying at a traditional uni would allow. That said, you need to spend around 12 hours a week on each undergraduate subject you do, so taking on extra work to finish ahead of time can be challenging.
How can I pay for my studies?
You may be eligible for a HELP loan from the Australian government, depending on your citizenship status and where you'll be living during your studies. You can also pay upfront with your credit card.
