We’re changing the game when it comes to learning that works for you. Year one, you can choose to study online or combine on-campus and online study. You’ll make all-important connections with your peers and academics, and build your industry network. Plus, because we know you have a busy life, we’ll keep the timetable nice and compact so you can fit everything in. As you move into your second and third years, you’ll study more independently as you start to specialise and undertake industry placements. The course changes as you learn more.

Will you get a solid grounding in the fundamental theory and practice in your field? Of course. That’s what your first year is all about. You then build on those foundations by specialising in an area that aligns with your career goals. Choose from: Cyber Security, Network Engineering, Software and Application Development, and Web Development.

Build your employability

Alongside your foundational and technical skills, you’ll also study employability skills subjects that will give you the aptitudes relevant to any job – such as communication, problem-solving and critical thinking. So you’ll graduate with the ultimate portfolio of skills that employers need. How do we know employers need them? We got them to help us develop the course.

A qualification at every step

As you complete each year of study, you gain a qualification. After the first year, you can receive a Diploma of Information Technology; after the second, an Associate Degree in Information Technology. So, if you achieve a diploma and then want to work for a year, when you return, you’ll go straight into the associate degree year, with credit for your completed diploma. You can also choose to fast-track your degree by studying across all three sessions in a year.

Accredited by the Australian Computer Society, the Bachelor of Information Technology at Charles Sturt University gives you a comprehensive understanding of fields across the entire IT industry.

Recommended study pattern

The course consists of fourteen core subjects, one restricted elective chosen from two subjects, a specialisation of eight subjects and five unrestricted electives or a minor sequence. All subjects are 8 points unless otherwise indicated. Study Centre students may have limited specialisations and minors selection.

Unrestricted Electives

Students must choose five unrestricted electives by completing:

* a minor in another discipline area and one unrestricted elective OR

* five unrestricted electives.

An unrestricted elective is any standard undergraduate subject offered provided prerequisites and enrolment restrictions have been met.

Minor Sequence

A minor is a prescribed set of subjects taken from a discipline other than the chosen specialisation. For a minor – comprised of subjects either from within the Faculty, or from another Faculty – students must take an established sequence of a set of four subjects. A minor must include no more than two level 1 subjects and must include at least one level 3 subject. Students must ensure that they take the necessary prerequisites. If a minor is chosen from those offered within the Faculty, it must be in an area other than that of the specialisation studied. No more than one subject can be counted towards a minor if it has already been undertaken as part of the core and/or the specialisation. A student cannot claim more than one minor.

• Successful completion of at least two appropriate standard IT university-level subjects.

• A completed High School Certificate (or equivalent) with an ATAR of at least 55 (including adjustment factors);OR
• Completion of the HSC (or equivalent) with strong performance (such as 60% or higher marks) in subjects in the Information Technology area; OR
• For recent school leavers, a report from the School Principal, equivalent to that used in the School Recommendation Scheme (SRS), recommending the applicant as well-suited for university study; OR
• Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) with an equivalent ranking to the currently listed ATAR.

• A completed AQF Certificate III in Information Technology (including any specialisation of Information Technology) or a completed AQF Certificate III in an area related to Information Technology.

• IT related professional certifications such as from CISCO, Microsoft, IBM and other professional industries; OR
• Two years relevant professional IT work experience (i.e. in areas such as programmer, analyst, systems administration, help desk, network support but NOT clerical roles such as data entry or secretarial) demonstrated by a detailed resume.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) and credit for current competencies will be granted to eligible applicants.

ITC396 - IT Work Placement

Some online subjects include a compulsory or optional residential school. These are an opportunity to come on campus for between one and five days for face-to-face learning.

You'll meet your lecturers and classmates, put theory into practice in our facilities, and could take part in anything from exam prep workshops and guest speaker presentations, to lab work and research tutorials
