The Bachelor of Arts (Korean Studies) prepares students for working and living in one of the world&#39;s most fascinating cultural and technological power houses, the Republic of Korea. Graduates who demonstrate strong linguistic and cultural competency in Korean Studies are highly sought after in a number of employment fields that require intercultural communication skills and a global world view.In this program you will explore your interest in Korean society and culture through a program which will equip you to succeed in Korea-related careers after graduation. You will also learn about the history, culture, politics and society of one of the most exciting and vibrant parts of the world and become part of the close-knit Korean Studies student community for the duration of your studies through additional extra-curricular and postgraduate study opportunities offered through the Korea Research Centre of Western Australia.You may also have opportunities to apply for work internships in Korea through our specially designed programs.No prior experience in studying a second language is required. This program is not suitable for native Korean speakers.

Korean Beginners 1

This subject is suitable for students with no or very limited experience in foreign language learning and is designed to support the learning needs of a university student with no or very limited knowledge of the Korean language. With a focus on supportive and scaffolded approach to language learning, this unit will introduce students to basic written and spoken Korean communication skills needed in daily life in Korea. On successful completion of this subject students will be able to master basic communication skills required when travelling or working in Korea, such as greetings, introductions, talking about past events, asking and giving permission as well as asking and giving directions. Students will also be introduced to the Korean writing system hangeul, and learn skills in writing basic emails, text messages and SMS messages in Korean while learning about Korean society, culture and history to contextualise their learning.On successful completion of Korean Beginners 1 and 2, students will reach a level of competency equivalent to the National Institute of Korean Language’s Standard Curriculum for Korean Language TOPIK-I Level 2 lower level proficiency.Korean language study is highly recommended for students planning a career in engineering, science, commerce, international relations, creative arts or teaching. This subject builds on the learning outcomes of Korean Beginners 1. Focusing on a supportive and scaffolded approach to language learning, this subject will build on the basic written and spoken Korean communication skills achieved through the successful completion of Korean Beginners 1. On successful completion of this unit students will be able to extend their knowledge of the basic communication skills required when travelling or working in Korea.Through readings and classroom exercises, students will also be introduced to polite formal language registers required in the Korean workplace and learn further key grammatical structures while learning about Korean education system, workplace cultures food cultures to contextualise their language learning.On successful completion of Korean Beginners 1 and 2, students will reach a level of competency equivalent to the National Institute of Korean Language’s Standard Curriculum for Korean Language TOPIK-I Level 2 lower level proficiency.The study of Korean language and culture is highly recommended for students planning on a career in engineering, science, commerce, international relations, creative arts or teaching. Korean Beginners 2

This subject offers students an opportunity to gain a deep understanding of South Korean society and history through the study of Korean popular culture, music and film. From trot to K-pop, this subject traces the development of Korean popular music, cinema and other creative industries in Korea. The focus will be on examining the political, cultural, economic and social significance of creative industries in modern Korea, through examining global idol cultures, gaming and fandom communities, the world of South Korean cinema, TV dramas and webtoons, and the role screen cultures have played in Korean society in the past. This subject will also cover North Korean public and popular culture, focusing on the political and social importance of culture in North Korea. This is an advanced level subject in Korean, designed to extend students’ ability to demonstrate advanced-level written and oral composition skills through interactive and task-based approaches established in KORE3000. This subject is primarily taught in the Korean language to maximise students’ opportunities to practise advanced level communication skills. This subject utilises authentic Korean texts ranging from news articles to popular culture texts, and introduces students to basic translation strategies for working with previously unseen texts. Students will achieve mid- to upper advanced level conversation and writing skills through engaging in interactive class discussions and practising in real-life communicative situations such as workplace interactions and job interviews. It will also include the development of research and debating skills in Korean.On successful completion of Korean 5 and 6, students will reach a level of competency equivalent to the National Institute of Korean Language’s Standard Curriculum for Korean Language upper 3/lower Level 4 on the TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) scale of proficiency.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Korean Advanced 5

This subject is suitable for students with no prior knowledge of Korean language or culture. It introduces students to the main events in the modern history of the Korean peninsula, Korean social and political structures, as well as the fractious relations between the two Koreas. The subject is designed for learners who will require an in-depth understanding of Korea in their future careers, and covers topics such as family structures and values, gender relations, migration and the significance of the corporate sector to Korean society and politics. The subject also covers aspects of North Korean society and relations between the two Koreas. On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to both read and produce low-intermediate level materials in Korean and gain further confidence in using Korean language in everyday and workplace settings.
