About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced command of spoken and written vocabulary, and communicate with ease in everyday and professional social situations
- analyse and critically evaluate materials in the Korean language, as well as summarise them, drawing conclusions
- apply increased vocabulary and more complex grammatical patterns appropriate to an advanced level
- develop advanced research skills through designing a research project, critically evaluating material from a variety of sources, and composing a research essay in Korean
- demonstrate advanced linguistic and cultural competencies through the application of a range of LOTE learning skills to authentic work place contexts.

This is an advanced level subject in Korean, designed to extend students’ ability to demonstrate advanced-level written and oral composition skills through interactive and task-based approaches established in KORE3000. This subject is primarily taught in the Korean language to maximise students’ opportunities to practise advanced level communication skills. This subject utilises authentic Korean texts ranging from news articles to popular culture texts, and introduces students to basic translation strategies for working with previously unseen texts. Students will achieve mid- to upper advanced level conversation and writing skills through engaging in interactive class discussions and practising in real-life communicative situations such as workplace interactions and job interviews. It will also include the development of research and debating skills in Korean.
On successful completion of Korean 5 and 6, students will reach a level of competency equivalent to the National Institute of Korean Language’s Standard Curriculum for Korean Language upper 3/lower Level 4 on the TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) scale of proficiency.

In order to achieve the learning outcomes of this subject, each week students are expected to study for at least five hours as follows:
(a) Prior to joining the simultaneous face to face sessions, students should listen to the online lecture grammatical points, and engage with the set preparation materials for the week as outlined in Blackboard.
(b) Spend at least 30 minutes to go over new vocabulary.
(c) Participate in 2x45 minute sessions via simultaneous online class environment.
(d) Complete and submit weekly online exercises to support memorisation of learning materials, and to engage with the feedback provided.- Critical debate on current topics in Korea (20%)
- Research essay in Korean (30%)
- Two IRIS Invigilated tests (50%)

Students with Korean language proficiency equivalent to Korean intermediate 5 may enrol in this subject upon successful placement test. Please contact the Unit Coordinator for more information.

Study load
- 0.125 EFTSL
- This is in the range of 10 to 12 hours of study each week.
Equivalent full time study load (EFTSL) is one way to calculate your study load. One (1.0) EFTSL is equivalent to a full-time study load for one year.

What’s a single subject?
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
How can I use single subjects to get into a full degree?
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
