There are many benefits to learning another language. Improve your memory, keep your mind agile and increase your ability to communicate with more people globally, whether for business or leisure. This subject is for students who have completed HSC-level Japanese (or have equivalent proficiency). The subject aims to develop your early intermediate-level communicative competence in Japanese. You will enhance your early intermediate listening and speaking skills in Japanese and your early intermediate skills in reading and writing Japanese. You will consolidate your knowledge of approximately 150-200 previously studied elementary kanji, and learn an additional 130 new kanji (approximately). In this subject you will gain an awareness of some aspects of Japanese society and culture relevant to intercultural communication at early intermediate level and you will create language learning strategies that you can employ as you progress.

Japanese Language 2A

This subject explores contemporary Japanese popular culture through the topic areas of anime, manga, popular music, television and the spread of Japanese popular culture abroad.  On successful completion of this subject, you will have some understanding of the role popular culture plays in everyday life in Japan and ways in which ideas and values are communicated through it. This subject will assist you in learning the Japanese language to develop an understanding of Japanese culture.  However, no proficiency in the Japanese language is required and non-language students will be able to gain a foundational knowledge of Japanese popular culture.  You will study excerpts of various authentic examples as well as the academic literature in the field.

Introduction to Japanese Popular Culture

This subject aims to further develop your Japanese proficiency to a higher level, while introducing you to Japanese contemporary culture. You will enhance your reading, listening, writing and speaking skills through learning activities using a variety of literary/audio-visual texts such as manga, anime, literature and film. The subject also provides you with opportunities to acquire cultural knowledge as well as sociolinguistic and sociocultural competence.

This subject will increase your ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with more people globally, whether for business or leisure. You will be introduced to aspects of the Japanese language and system of communication that will enhance your ability to communicate effectively and appropriately in a variety of social contexts. Topics covered include linguistic variation in Japanese, rules for communication in certain social and cultural contexts in Japan, and issues surrounding cross-cultural communication between native speakers and non-native speakers of Japanese.

Introduction to Japanese Language in Society

There are many benefits to learning another language. Improve your memory, keep your mind agile and increase your ability to communicate with more people globally, whether for business or leisure. Continuing on from the first trimester intermediate Japanese language subject, in this subject you will develop intermediate-level communicative competence in Japanese. You will enhance your intermediate listening and speaking skills in Japanese and your intermediate skills in reading and writing Japanese. You’ll consolidate previously studied 280-300 kanji, and learn an additional 120-130 new kanji characters. You will gain an awareness of some aspects of Japanese society and culture relevant to intercultural communication at an intermediate level and you will create language learning strategies that you can employ as you progress.

Japanese Language 2B

The cognitive benefits to learning another language are many. Improve your memory, keep your mind agile and increase your ability to communicate with more people globally, whether for business or leisure. Continuing on from the first trimester 100-level Japanese subject, in this subject you will further develop your elementary communicative competence in Japanese. You will learn more basic aural and oral skills in Japanese (including expressing probability, moderating language, potential form of verbs, suffixes like -tai, -sugiru-, -to omou and -deshoo). You will continue to learn basic skills in reading and writing in Japanese (consolidating hiragana, katakana and continuing to add elementary-level kanji). In this subject you will gain an awareness of some aspects of Japanese society and culture relevant to intercultural communication and you will create language learning strategies that you can employ as you progress.

Japanese Language 1B

Develops competence in basic spoken and written Japanese. This subject builds on the work you learned in HMJ101. This subject, the second half of introductory Japanese, develops competence in basic spoken and written skills with an emphasis on the interactive use of the language.

Introduction to Japanese 1B

This is an introductory subject for students with little or no prior knowledge of Japanese. This subject has an emphasis on the interactive use of the Japanese language. It develops competence in basic spoken and written Japanese. The subject also provides a competence base in grammatical knowledge and oral/aural skills from which students can proceed to HMJ102. While a key goal of this subject is the acquisition of communication skills in Japanese, the subject also provides the basic knowledge of cross-cultural communication by exploring the linguistic and cultural differences between English and Japanese.
