This subject was previously known as Beginning Japanese. This subject introduces basic communicative skills in Japanese at an elementary level. Students acquire the four essential language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing characters (Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji) through ample practice in communicative activities supported by digital technology. Students will also be introduced to Japanese society and culture through mini-lectures, audio-visual presentations and virtual real-time classroom-based or online tutorials.﻿Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. This subject was previously known as Beginning Japanese Developing.This subject covers both written and spoken Japanese at an introductory level that builds on prior knowledge gained in Beginning Japanese. A communication-oriented approach is used to help students develop confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing Standard Japanese so that they will be able to interact with speakers of Japanese in simple day-to-day situations. A wider range of topics on Japanese society and culture will also be introduced through mini-lectures, audio-visual presentations and real-time classroom-based or online tutorials.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject, you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Foundations of Japanese

The cognitive benefits to learning another language are many and varied. Improve your memory, keep your mind agile and increase your ability to communicate with more people globally, whether for business or leisure. This subject is for beginners and aims to establish elementary communicative competence in Japanese. You will learn basic aural and oral skills in Japanese (including how to introduce yourself, talk about your daily activities, and use fundamental forms of verbs, adjectives and particles. You will also develop basic skills in reading and writing in Japanese (all hiragana and katakana, and elementary-level kanji). In this subject you will gain an awareness about some aspects of Japanese society and culture relevant to intercultural communication and you will create language learning strategies that you can employ as you progress.There is a non-mandatory 1 day intensive school available for this subject held at UNE Sydney Campus. Dates for this intensive school to be advised.

Japanese for beginners. Learn to speak, read and write in Japanese to a basic level on a range of topics. If you enjoy Japanese society and culture, this online language course should give you a taste of Japan and its everyday way of life.

This subject is available to students who have no knowledge of Japanese. It is an introductory subject focusing on elementary spoken and written Japanese. You will learn to read hiragana and katakana syllabic scripts as well as approximately 30 kanji characters. You will also be introduced to Japanese culture. Culture is embedded throughout language, so learning another language develops your intercultural communication skills, preparing you to be responsive and agile in varied situations. Those who have prior learning of Japanese should contact the Japanese Program coordinator for a placement test (k.okano@latrobe.edu.au). You may be asked to move to another level by the subject coordinator prior to the university census date (usually in week 3 or 4). This is a studyflex subject, offered for both face-to-face and online students. The lecture is delivered online, live, and recorded and uploaded to LMS. Face-to-face students attend tutorials on campus, while online students attend live, online tutorials that are not recorded.

This subject was previously known as JPNX101/JNPX1010 Introductory Japanese I.This subject provides introductory Japanese language instruction for students with no previous knowledge of Japanese. Students develop basic speaking, listening, reading &amp; writing skills, including mastery of the hiragana &amp; katakana scripts. By the end of the course, students should be able to describe their surroundings, ask questions, make plans, and effectively participate in a variety of fundamental conversations. Furthermore, the subject will also assist students in developing an awareness of sociocultural issues which influence Japanese language use. The subject provides opportunities for interactive language learning, and a wide variety of methods for Japanese practice through the use of online resources.

This subject explores various aspects of contemporary Japanese society by examining social, cultural and historical contexts. This subject employs &#39;Extensive Reading&#39; methodology. You will read large volumes of Japanese text matched to your individual proficiency level in order to acquire and consolidate level-appropriate vocabulary and grammatical structures. Socio-cultural knowledge and awareness are also enhanced via the thematic content of the texts. The readings/stories provided include both fiction and non-fiction and most have accompanying audio and illustrations. You will answer comprehension questions and provide written reflective comments (in Japanese) on the completion of each reading/story. This subject is an elective that aims to bolster your reading skills and support your progress in the core Japanese language units.

Extensive Reading in Japanese

This subject has an emphasis on the interactive use of the Japanese language and further develops communicative competence in speaking, listening, reading, writing and cultural knowledge. It provides students with opportunities to apply and extend skills with a focus on practical, everyday use of the Japanese language. Intermediate Japanese: Extending Everyday Contexts

There are many benefits to learning another language. Improve your memory, keep your mind agile and increase your ability to communicate with more people globally, whether for business or leisure. This subject is for students who have completed HSC-level Japanese (or have equivalent proficiency). The subject aims to develop your early intermediate-level communicative competence in Japanese. You will enhance your early intermediate listening and speaking skills in Japanese and your early intermediate skills in reading and writing Japanese. You will consolidate your knowledge of approximately 150-200 previously studied elementary kanji, and learn an additional 130 new kanji (approximately). In this subject you will gain an awareness of some aspects of Japanese society and culture relevant to intercultural communication at early intermediate level and you will create language learning strategies that you can employ as you progress.

These include improving your memory, keeping your mind agile and increasing your ability to communicate with more people globally, whether for business or leisure. In this subject you will continue to develop your listening and speaking skills in Japanese to an upper intermediate-level and you will enhance your skills in reading and writing Japanese. You will also build your awareness of some aspects of Japanese society and culture relevant to intercultural communication at an upper intermediate-level and create practical language learning strategies to employ as you progress.
