German Language 1A

Introduction to German 1A

If you are just starting out with the German language or you’re picking it back up as a refresher, then this is the right subject for you. Our goal is to not only learn how to communicate in German, but also to focus on gaining independence in language acquisition by developing an understanding of how the language works. You’ll engage with a sequenced study of its basic building blocks that is supported by our popular Bausteine eins YouTube series and our own textbook, which together cover everything you need to know at an Introductory level. In particular, you’ll concentrate on developing the individual vocabulary of words, phrases and structures you need to help you communicate authentically with others about your life and interests.

German is a major world language, with more than 130 million native speakers in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and many other countries. There are German-speaking minority groups in over 42 countries across the globe. In this subject you will develop your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, which will allow you to increase your proficiency in everyday basic written and spoken German. You will achieve language proficiency equivalent to Level A1/2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Enhance your ability to communicate in German, whether for business or personal relationships.

German Language 1B

Building upon your knowledge from the first trimester 300 level German language subject, this subject will further enhance your confidence in your German language skills. You will further develop your competence in reading, writing, understanding and speaking German at an advanced level. While continuing to strengthen communicative competence in spoken German, your focus will be on grammar and translation skills for written language. Your ability to appreciate cultural products of German speaking societies will also be further enhanced. Pursue your goal of becoming a confident communicator in a second language and future proof your career in a global economy where over 130 million people speak German.

German Language 3B

Building upon your knowledge from GRMN202, this subject will further enhance your confidence in your German language skills. You will develop your competence in reading, writing, understanding and speaking German at an upper-intermediate to advanced level. While continuing to strengthen communicative competence in spoken German, equal focus will be given to grammar and composition skills for written language. Your ability to appreciate cultural products of German speaking societies will also be further enhanced. Pursue your goal of becoming a confident communicator in a second language and future proof your career in a global economy where over 130 million people speak German.

German Language 3A

German, spoken by over 130 million people worldwide, is one of the widely recognised and commonly used languages in Europe and across the globe. This subject is designed for students who have passed the first trimester subject in intermediate German. It is also appropriate for you if you have equivalent competence and wish to continue your language studies. Lectures and tutorials are devoted to language extension and consolidation in all four skill areas (reading, listening, speaking and writing). In addition, you will learn about German society and culture in your reading. Enhance your ability to communicate in German, whether for business or personal relationships.

German Language 2B

German is a widely recognised and commonly used language in Europe and across the world. This unit is designed for students who have passed the second trimester introductory unit in German; or have passed German in the HSC. It is also appropriate for you if you have equivalent competence and wish to continue your language studies. Lectures and tutorials are devoted to language extension and consolidation in all four skill areas (reading, listening, speaking and writing). In addition, you are familiarised with German society and culture in your reading. Enhance your ability to communicate in German, whether for business or personal relationships.

German Language 2A

German is the most widely spoken first language in Europe and one of the most important international languages. It is the official language of Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg and is also an official language of Belgium and Switzerland. This subject is designed for students with no or little previous knowledge of German. The emphasis throughout the subject is on the acquisition of the basic skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing in everyday German. You will also discuss aspects of contemporary German culture and society. You will achieve language proficiency equivalent to Level A1/1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Get ready to speak German at a basic level. You’ll build a vocabulary of common words and get to know elementary grammar. Write short and simple sentences. Enjoy light conversations. Touch on German culture, lifestyle, and everyday life in Germany.
