This subject was previously known as Beginning Chinese Developing. This subject covers both written and spoken Chinese at an introductory level that builds on prior knowledge gained in CHN100 Chinese for Beginners. A communication-oriented approach is used to help students develop confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing Standard Modern Chinese so that they will be able to interact with speakers of Chinese in simple day-to-day situations. A wider range of topics on Chinese society and culture will also be introduced through mini-lectures, audio-visual presentations and real-time classroom-based or online tutorials.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Foundations of Chinese

This subject further develops intercultural communicative competence in the Chinese language through collaborative and self-directed learning activities. Students will acquire linguistic and cultural skills in handling a wide range of topics and social situations. They will be encouraged to express opinions, conduct discussions and present reports in a socially and culturally appropriate manner. Students acquire the four essential language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing through ample practice in communicative activities supported by digital technology. Get ready to speak at a basic level in Mandarin Chinese. You’ll build a vocabulary of common words and get to know basic grammar. Write short and simple sentences. Enjoy polite conversations. Touch on some Chinese cultural practices and traditions.

Building on the foundation skills taught in TAS-HMC101, TAS-HMC102 further develops competence in beginners&#39; spoken and written Chinese (simplified characters). The focus is to improve speaking and listening, reading and writing skills.

Introduction to Chinese 1B

This course focuses on the analysis and translation of intermediate texts from various periods. Based on the knowledge acquired in Literary Chinese 1, the course attempts to improve the students’ proficiency in philological translation with a sample of different types of text. To meet the challenges posed by the selected texts, the course further introduces Sinological reference tools useful for their elucidation.

Literary Chinese 2

This subject develops students&#39; communicative competence in the Chinese language over a wider range of real-life situations. Conversation, readings, discussions and report writing will be conducted on topics in relation to the contemporary Chinese society and culture. Intermediate Chinese: Everyday Contexts

Would you like to extend your knowledge of China’s inherited cultural values, and gain the extra edge in interacting effectively with Chinese people in tourism, cultural activities, and business practices?  This subject serves as a companion to CHIN350: Chinese Social Culture and Reading I and is designed to further develop your understanding, with topics ranging from others’ opinion, filial piety, hometown complex, endurance and respecting elders through to taboo, the concept of time, all for children, golden mean and body language.  In studying this subject, you will also sharpen your Chinese reading comprehension and writing skills and further develop your understanding of socio-cultural norms in China today.

Social Culture in Chinese Reading II

Are you interested in learning about the ten socio-cultural norms of the oldest living civilisation of the world, with the second largest economy and a super-scale market of 1.4 billion population? This subject is designed to help you gain a mastery of China’s inherited cultural values, along with a competitive edge in interacting with Chinese people in high-employment areas such as tourism, cultural activities and business practices.  You’ll develop your knowledge of key Chinese socio-cultural norms with a firm foundation in topics ranging from mannerisms, privacy, humility, inside and outside, implicitness and face through to money, spouse preference and social hierarchy.  You will also sharpen your Chinese reading comprehension and writing skills, and develop a well-rounded understanding of socio-cultural norms in China today. This study can be expanded upon in the companion subject CHIN370: Chinese Social Culture and Reading II.

Social Culture in Chinese Reading I

This advanced level subject is for students who have either gained a distinction or above in a full second year of Chinese study, or have completed three years of study or the equivalent. It is also suitable for students who have Chinese-speaking backgrounds. The subject will assist you to develop your Chinese writing ability as well as your familiarity with Chinese written conventions. Chinese and English writing style and conventions will be compared. Through various types of exercises you will learn to write text appropriate for both academic and practical purposes, covering a variety of different styles and genres. You will learn to write in Chinese with confidence at an advanced level of accuracy and appropriateness acceptable to a native speaker of Chinese; this includes the use of handwritten Chinese characters.

Advanced Chinese: Writing

This lower intermediate unit consolidates the foundations laid in two-and-a-half previous years of Chinese study or the equivalent. The main focus of the unit is on understanding spoken Chinese, although some work on speaking, and on reading and writing Chinese characters is also incorporated and assessed. By studying many recordings of authentic spoken Chinese on a variety of topics relating to life in a Chinese context, you will expand your vocabulary, review and expand your knowledge of Chinese grammar, and extend your understanding of Chinese culture. By developing your listening skills you will be helped to understand spoken Chinese with greater confidence. You will also improve your proficiency in speaking Chinese while studying this unit.
