Intermediate Chinese: Listening
About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- demonstrate effective listening skills to understand spoken Chinese in a range of authentic contexts on a variety of daily life topics and levels of formality;
- demonstrate the ability to transmit knowledge effectively in spoken Chinese on a range of daily life topics;
- further apply the major grammatical patterns of Chinese effectively and accurately in spoken expression, and in writing (including the use of handwritten Chinese characters) at intermediate level of proficiency; and
- demonstrate developed critical listening skills and strategies to generate solutions to the challenges of understanding spoken Chinese at an intermediate level of proficiency.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
This lower intermediate unit consolidates the foundations laid in two-and-a-half previous years of Chinese study or the equivalent. The main focus of the unit is on understanding spoken Chinese, although some work on speaking, and on reading and writing Chinese characters is also incorporated and assessed. By studying many recordings of authentic spoken Chinese on a variety of topics relating to life in a Chinese context, you will expand your vocabulary, review and expand your knowledge of Chinese grammar, and extend your understanding of Chinese culture. By developing your listening skills you will be helped to understand spoken Chinese with greater confidence. You will also improve your proficiency in speaking Chinese while studying this unit.
Assessment 1: Language Assessment 1. 1500 words (equivalent). Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-4;
Assessment 2: Language Assessment 2. 1500 words (equivalent). Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-4;
Assessment 3: Take Home Exam. It is mandatory to pass this component in order to pass the unit. 2 hrs 15 mins. Relates to Learning Outcomes 3, 4.- Assessment 1 - Language Assessment 1: 1500 words (equivalent). Listening comprehension tasks (30%)
- Assessment 2 - Language Assessment 2: 1500 words (equivalent). Listening comprehension tasks (30%)
- Assessment 3 - Take Home Exam: 2 hrs 15 mins. Take Home Exam consists of listening comprehension and writing tasks and requires the use of Chinese characters. It is mandatory to pass this component in order to pass the unit (40%)
