In this subject, you will develop practical abilities in both receptive and production skills in Auslan to a level of basic communicative competence. You will be introduced to key grammatical structures of Auslan and the use of the language in its appropriate cultural, social context and begin to understand the history of Auslan and the deaf community. Culture is embedded throughout language, so learning another language develops your intercultural communication skills, preparing you to be responsive and agile in varied situations.This is a level 1 subject. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Australian Sign Language 1A

Japan is well known in Australia for its delicious cuisine, powder snow, fantastic hospitality and amazing tourism. In this subject, we dive deeper to understand contemporary Japanese society by exploring some of the social and political issues that characterise today’s Japan. Topics include social inequality, education, gender issues, religion, politics and peace. This subject is conducted entirely in English and the reading material is in English. After the two-week delivery, students are given an extra fortnight to write their essay. You will come away with a sophisticated understanding of contemporary Japan.This is a level 3 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
