This subject examines the incidence of crime, the development of the law and criminal justice processes in response to crime, and the means of punishment to deal with crime. Covering the period from the Middle Ages to the end of the nineteenth century, the focus will be mainly on Europe and the ways in which crime impacted on communities, how the meaning of criminality shifted over time, and the agencies for change in dealing with criminals.

Plunge into the history of crime, law and criminal justice. Dissect how attitudes to crime have shifted over the centuries. Follow the twists and turns of the witch-hunts in the Middle Ages. Look at executions in the eighteenth century and identification of criminals in the nineteenth century. 

A History of Crime and Punishment

In this capstone subject, students will combine key concepts, theories and themes with skills in evaluating information and research to address a current industry-relevant problem. Students will develop a &quot;prototype&quot; solution to a problem that is of concern to criminal justice agencies, and other organisations engaged in the prevention and regulation of crime. Students should complete this course in their final year of study. Students should be in the Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice to undertake this subject, and must have completed at least 180CP of subjects, including all 1st and 2nd year core subjects in their program. Dual Degree students should contact the Program Director to confirm if this subject is to be completed as part of their program.This subject should be completed in the final year of the Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice Program. Students are required to have foundational knowledge in relation to theories of offending, victimisation and the prevention of crime, and an ability to apply that knowledge. It is also anticipated that they will have well-developed time management, research, analytical and communication skills, and be able to work effectively in teams.

Take a practical approach to law as you apply a prototype solution to regulating crime – much like you would in a criminal justice agency. In this final-year subject, you’ll apply criminological theories as you face real-world problems.

Applied Criminal Justice

Despite the public&#39;s obsession with crime, victimisation and criminal justice, despite the morbid fear that crime and victimisation arouses, despite the endless volumes written to account for offending, victimisation and criminal justice processing, gender, the most powerful social factor of all has been virtually ignored by criminologists.&quot; (Leonard, 1982). This course explores the persistent and profound differences women and men&#39;s experiences of crime. The course considers how gender intersects with other social categories such as race, class, socioeconomic status, and ethnicity to shape crime and responses to it.

Seek to explain the profound differences between genders in crime rates, patterns, victimisation, and criminal justice system experiences and responses. Then consider intersections between gender, Indigeneity, class and sexual orientation.

Gender, Crime and Justice

This subject examines the origins and development of corrective services in Australia. The correctional system is studied in terms of custodial and non-custodial sanctions, and considers special client populations including men, women, juveniles and Indigenous offenders. The issues of privatisation and deaths in custody are examined.This subject provides an introduction to the corrections system in Australia, exploring the evolution and current state of corrective services through the lenses of principles, policies, and practices. Students will learn about the history and foundations of the corrections system, staff and client experiences in custodial and community corrections, and contemporary issues in corrections.Assessment details will be advised at the beginning of the subject offering.
