Introduction to Mental Health

This subject examines the foundations of mental health and wellbeing for individuals, families and communities. Your learning will be underpinned by models of consumer engagement, social inclusion and human rights. Using a bio-psycho-social and systems-thinking approach, you will critically examine the personal experiences of mental health and wellbeing challenges and the options for support. Emphasis is placed on service development, contextual safety and relational approaches for supporting and promoting mental health and wellbeing.

Mental Health and Wellbeing

Approximately one-third of all individuals reporting somatic complaints also have anxiety disorder and / or depression. Thus, many people presenting to health practitioners will also have mental health conditions. One aim of this subject is for you to be able to identify mental health conditions, and some core principles of working with people with such conditions. People presenting for assistance in rehabilitation settings also frequently present in a state of distress - for instance, persistent pain, anger, anxiety, and shame - which can have a substantial impact on how well such people progress. It&#39;s therefore important for you to have a thorough knowledge of these states, how they can impact on a person&#39;s behaviour, and core principles of working with people in such states. As well, you will be asked to apply these principles in analysing how to tailor your approach when working with people with these conditions. This subject is designed for second-year students. To maximise your chances of success in achieving the intended learning outcomes, it is recommended that you complete this subject in your second year.

Mental Health and Rehabilitation

Although associations between crime and mental illness have a long history, the relationship is complex and contentious. Problem areas include media representations and social constructions of violent offenders, methodological and conceptual inconsistencies, and limited appreciation of the heterogeneity of mental health issues. This subject of study aims to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate the evidence concerning the crime-mental health relationship. Factors other than mental illness that may be associated with violence and general criminality are explored, as are ethical challenges relating to this area. Particular mental disorders most often linked with criminality are examined and the relevant evidence is evaluated. Based on the content of this subject of study, students will demonstrate knowledge of ethical challenges and provide recommendations for best practice for both empirical research and policy.

You will be introduced to the core principles and skills of therapeutic modalities relevant to mental health care and addictions treatment, developing knowledge through a range of online learning activities.

Psychological Therapies in Mental Health Care

This subject provides an introduction to the field of study, integrating information about maternal and infant mental health. Dominant theoretical approaches are presented and considered together with information about infant development and pregnancy. Risk factors for mental health problems are presented for discussion and reflection, and information is provided about common disorders and treatment approaches. In addition, basic skills relating to building and presenting an argument, accessing and using professional literature, making an observational record, creating documents to professional standards, and managing one’s self under pressure will be covered.

Introduction to Perinatal and Infant Mental Health

Each year 1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental illness. Many people are not knowledgeable or confident to offer assistance, despite their desire to do so. This subject will teach you the skills to help someone you&#39;re concerned about – whether it be a friend, family member, patient, client, employee or colleague - and also identify and respond to your own mental health needs in a trauma-informed, evidence-based manner.

Foundational Mental Health Awareness and Response Skills

This unit introduces students to the ways in which human behaviour has been conceptualised as &#39;abnormal&#39;. Students are introduced in depth to the diagnostic manual used by Australian psychologists. Important examples of psychological disorders are introduced in terms of their phenomenology and nosology, as well as theories about aetiology and approaches to psychological treatment. In sum, the unit develops understanding of the concept of abnormal behaviour, and develops understanding of key mental disorders and the major psychological treatments used to address them.
