Agribusiness is the study of consumers, retailers, marketers, and primary producers - and the business of keeping the chain working profitably. This program meets the needs of three groups of professionals: those working in agribusiness who wish to upgrade their management skills; those wishing to redirect their careers into agribusiness; and new graduates in either business or agricultural/rural science wishing to add to their employment prospects. Students have opportunities to enhance their knowledge, skills and practice; to develop their careers; and to deliver better and more profitable outcomes for Australian agribusiness. Master of Agribusiness

Study Australia’s only specialised major in vertebrate pests, blending the theoretical and practical elements of managing wildlife and pest animals, embedded within broad environmental and ecological knowledge. Study animal health, welfare and behaviour and learn how to implement game, pest and wildlife management plans. Undertake a 2-week field trip from your first year, to a local site abundant with native and introduced wildlife species such as deer, wild dogs, ibis, kangaroos, bettongs, potoroos, bandicoots, and brushtail possums. Bachelor of Environmental Science (Wildlife and Pest Management)

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is concerned with the function of biological systems at the molecular level. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is central to most studies in biology and life sciences and is directly related to biomedical research and biotechnology. In this subject, students are introduced to gene structure and function, DNA replication, transcription and translation; molecular biology; protein structure and its relationship to protein function and enzyme kinetics. Students will investigate a typical biochemistry technique and conduct research on a specific protein.

Study cells up close to learn how they are made up, function and convert food into energy to sustain life. Discover why protein is critical to a cell’s structure and performance, and how it helps to regulate the body’s tissues and vital organs.

Introduction to Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

The subject outlines the principles of cell and molecular biology as underpinnings of life and organism function. Topics covered include cell structure and function, the molecular aspects of the cell cycle and the molecular basis of genetics. In this subject, you are introduced to cell biology and cell metabolism, building on the concepts developed in BCM201 (Introduction to Biochemistry and Molecular Biology). You will study the generation of energy in cells through the oxidation of carbohydrates and lipids; the formation of ATP, the energy currency of cells; lipids, cellular membranes and compartmentation; and the signalling processes that co-ordinate and regulate cellular activity. The practical exercises illustrate some basic experimental and data analysis skills and reinforce concepts in metabolism and cell biology.

Foundations of Human Biology 2

In this subject, students are introduced to applying economic principles to agriculture, agribusiness, and related markets. Students will apply economic principles to study issues in food production and food security.  Content will include topics in farm management and organisation, the operation of agricultural markets, managing risk and the economics of government intervention in food and agricultural markets. The role of soil stewardship, farm diversification and farming in multifunctional landscapes will also be considered.

Ongoing advances in molecular technology, statistics and bioinformatics have revolutionized our ability to gather and apply genetic information. This unit deals with the distribution of genetic variation among individuals, populations and species, and the relevance of such variation to evolutionary processes. Specific topics include selection and adaptive potential; mutation; inbreeding; population divergence; speciation; effective population size and extinction risk. Approaches to the study of genetic variation are explored at levels ranging from pedigree analysis to molecular genomics. Particular emphasis is placed on the importance of evolutionary genetics to the conservation, management and restoration of wild populations.

Evolutionary and Conservation Genetics

In this subject, you will be introduced to the biology and biological processes of aquatic animals and plants commonly encountered in aquaculture operations. You will be introduced to phylogenetic relationships and investigate the anatomy, physiology, and life history of eukaryotes, protozoa, finfish, shellfish, crustaceans, micro-organisms, algae, jellies, hydrozoans, bryozoans, seabirds, marine mammals and relevant pest species. You will develop practical skills in sample collection, animal and plant identification, microscopy, dissection techniques, scientific drawing and science communications.This subject also incorporates learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, for you to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs. You will be introduced to:- a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice- principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios- reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations- ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry.
