The Internet has dramatically changed the way people and organisations communicate, whether for better or worse. For many, online communication through digital and social media is now one of their most significant forms of interaction with others. Digital and social media also underpin collaboration between people, either in formal groups or loose networks. Understanding how the Internet affords us new and different ways of communicating is, therefore, essential. This subject will enable you to become an effective and sophisticated user of digital and social media, able to deploy techniques, technologies and underlying concepts for online communication, collaboration and media creation.

Identify the various technical strands that make up the foundation of the world wide web. Dig into wikis, blogs and social networks. Take a look into the future of online communication tools. Find new and different ways of communicating online.

Web Communications

This subject is one of three subjects in the Technologies Options group. Completing all three will provide a specialisation in Technologies. It is designed to provide students with a framework for developing and implementing digital solutions to contemporary issues in education. It has a pedagogical grounding that looks specifically at learning rather than the technological tools and platforms themselves. It is designed to give students the critical literacies required to assess the merit of such tools, use them to design and build robust solutions to everyday problems and evaluate their suitability for the chosen task. Students will be able to take the lessons learned in this unit and apply them across a range of learning landscapes.

Technologies: Digital Solutions

This subject is one of three subjects in the Technologies Options group. Completing all three will provide a specialisation in Technologies. This subject provides an overview of the fundamental elements of the Design and Technologies curriculum. By applying knowledge and practical skills and processes when using technologies and other resources to create innovative solutions, independently and collaboratively, students will develop knowledge, understanding and skills to respond creatively to current and future needs.
