Business Open Degree Pathway

The Graduate Certificate in Business Studies is a generalist program designed to introduce you to the core skills and knowledge to succeed in business. You will cultivate your critical thinking and analysis, reflective practice and professional presentation, as well as develop a knowledge base of contemporary business theory and practices in the foundations of marketing, accounting and accountability, sustainability and management.This Graduate Certificate is also a potential pathway for students who have not studied at university before, but who may be interested in further postgraduate study with the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics.

In this subject, you will identify skill sets and knowledge required to work in a chosen industry and evaluate your own skills, attributes and learning goals to work in your chosen industry. Through case studies, workshops, online materials and tutorials, you will identify challenges and opportunities in your industry and will identify the skills and business tools needed to address them. You will explore the importance of planning and strategy development in management decision making. This subject also incorporates learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, for you to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs.

Applied Business Foundations

This subject focuses on the principles and tools associated with contemporary Lean Thinking and practice. Lean Thinking or ‘lean’ is a systematic method of continuous improvement through minimising waste without sacrificing productivity, creating more value for customers. It has been identified and applied by many organisations as a key strategy to organise human and production activities to deliver more benefits to the organisation and the customer. It does this by eliminating waste, creating knowledge, respecting people, building in quality, visualising practices, and managing workflow. Activities and assessment tasks in this subject will focus on identifying and analysing lean tools, applying them in practice, and assessing their contribution to continuous improvement and excellence in an organisation.In conjunction with the discipline theory, this subject introduces learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, so you have the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs. You will be introduced to:- a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice- principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios- reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations- ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry.

Lean Thinking

This subject introduces you to effective professional communication techniques and practices applicable to the workplace and study. You will learn about the foundations of communication, the various communication styles, professional etiquette, and different types of communication behaviours. A central focus of this subject is for you to understand your own style, and gain an awareness of how you communicate and how others might feel based on how you behave and interact.In addition, you will explore a range of barriers and enablers to effective communication, and develop strategies such as active listening, conflict resolution, and giving and receiving feedback. You will practice, and be assessed on, effective communication in groups and in a simulated environment. This will include participation in role plays, interviewing others, presenting ideas, and completing various group and individual activities. In conjunction with the discipline theory, this unit introduces learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, so you have the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs. The Professional Communication subject is designed to help you develop essential communication skills that are vital for success in any professional setting. While this focuses on enhancing your ability to communicate effectively and professionally, it is not specifically tailored for those looking to improve their English language skills.

Professional Communication

Students can develop the fundamental written and verbal communication skills necessary for effective communication in both business careers and academic studies in this subject. As such, the focus of it is two-fold; firstly, developing your personal communication skills and secondly, also giving you a better understanding of the significant role of international business communication in the workplace.
