Environmental engineering is your pathway to protecting the natural environment and its resources by ensuring that we minimise the adverse effect we may have on it. In this program you will develop an understanding of complex environmental problems and issues, and of the challenges facing environmental sustainability. You will learn to design creative engineering solutions and manage key projects associated with environmental protection in the area of solid and hazardous waste management, air quality monitoring and control, water and wastewater treatment, and renewable energy. You will develop the skills to incorporate sustainability concepts into engineering work practices from various discipline backgrounds.

The subject will provide an overview of the concepts and principles of sustainable waste management. A critical approach to theories, techniques and methods of sustainable waste and resource management will be introduced in the course to enhance students’ knowledge and understanding on waste management. The subject will cover the subject areas of perceptions of waste, classification and characterization of waste, waste audit, 3R principles, waste collection, transportation, treatment technologies and safe disposal, performance evaluation, and strategy and policy regulation. In addition, the subject will cover the emerging concept of waste management such as ‘zero-waste’ in the context of circular economy.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Sustainable Waste Management

This subject gives students an understanding of the functional purpose of the machinery systems used on board a variety of ships. This knowledge can then be applied to obtaining effective engineering design solutions for these systems, so that they can meet their functional purposes within national and international statutory and regulatory frameworks.

Design of Marine Machinery Systems

This subject equips students with a knowledge of vessel hull forms, hydrostatic concepts and parameters, introduces the concepts of ship behaviour in waves and the process of evaluating the seakeeping characteristics of a vessel, and phases within the design process. The subject builds upon prior undergraduate engineering knowledge to develop the conceptual and analytical skills necessary at a detailed level of ship design with a particular emphasis required for initial parameter estimates.
