In this subject, we invite you as future health professionals to consider issues relevant to the health needs of a diverse multicultural population in Australia in terms of gender. You will explore current theoretical perspectives of gender and how these can be applied to better understand the impact gender has in relation to individuals, family and culture. This is examined with a particular focus on the health industry, workplaces, politics, sexuality, media and gender-based violence. Through lectures, directed reading and tutorials, you will explore how gender intersects with health within social, cultural and political contexts.

Culture, Society, Gender and Health

This subject will provide you with a broad understanding of health and wellbeing among Indigenous, culturally and linguistically diverse communities. This understanding is important for people working with diverse populations in healthcare settings who need to develop culturally-appropriate health promotion initiatives. Through guest and expert presentations, workshops and consideration of theoretical frameworks, you will cover topics such as risk factors to diseases, interactions with healthcare institutions and services, Australian settlement and migrations policies, and inequities of gender to good health and wellbeing. Your learning in this subject will be assessed through participation in group work and producing individual written work.

Multicultural Perspectives on Health and Wellbeing

In this subject, having completed your studies in PHE2HED, you will be able to adopt the role of a health education and development facilitator in one-to-one or small group formats in institutional or community settings. Working in teams and using a range of experiential learning formats, you will develop knowledge, skills and attitudes that will allow you to access and use resources that facilitate the planning, implementation and evaluation of education in diverse circumstances. Drawing on the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion (WHO 1986), the Sundsvall Statement (WHO 1991), the Jakarta Declaration (WHO 1997) and the Bangkok Charter for Health Promotion (2005). This subject will enable you to engage salient teaching and learning theories and practices with the view of empowering people as individuals and small groups to engage the factors influencing their health so as to improve their own health outcomes in a globalised world.

Health Education Development

In this subject, you will learn about elements of environmental health practice, risk management and health impact assessment including the assessment, correction, control and prevention of environmental health hazards in order to promote health, protect individuals, protect communities and prevent disease (for example, health protection strategies such as immunisation, and tobacco, e-cigarettes control and building control). You will examine aspects of environmental health practice and further develop an understanding of the role of environmental health practitioner in Government and industry settings.

Environmental Health Management

In this subject, you will have the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills required to plan and implement health promotion strategies. In this project-based subject, you will develop skills in program planning, implementation, engaging with key stakeholders, leadership skills and project management skills. It will provide you with the links between using heath promotion theories and the implementation needs assessment information to inform, develop and implement health promotion interventions.

Health Promotion Planning and Implementation

The purpose of this subject is to provide you with an understanding of the role of epidemiology in public health. You will learn about the different epidemiological study designs, their strengths and weaknesses, and how to apply those methods to address public health problems. You will learn how to write a clear and comprehensive research proposal and to critically appraise epidemiological studies from the public health literature. You will be introduced to the basic principles of infectious diseases surveillance and the investigation of disease outbreaks and you will learn about the epidemiological principles of screening.

Epidemiology for Public Health

This subject explores social, cultural and ecological determinants shaping health in communities and populations. You will examine critical social factors such as education, occupation, social class, gender, ethnicity and culture as a basis for understanding how social structures, practices and processes influence health, well-being and equity. You will gain an understanding of the interrelationships between people, other species, natural and built environments, human health and public health practice. Responses to public health risks and disruptions, such as climate change, natural disasters and emergencies, will be explored as well as the role of public health professionals in their prevention, management, mitigation and adaptation. You will be introduced to the frameworks that public health practitioners use to contribute to a socially and ecologically sustainable world, and to improve human health.

Socio-Ecological Perspectives on Public Health Threats

This subject introduces students to the use of mathematical models to describe the transmission and control of infectious diseases and to guide policy decisions. You will be introduced to the theory of infectious disease modelling, including numerical and analytical methods for analysing models. These models have advantages and disadvantages, including how they account for the inherent random events underlying epidemics. You will learn how to model different mechanisms of disease transmission such as respiratory transmission (e.g. COVID-19); sexual contact (e.g. HIV); or vector-borne (e.g. malaria). By considering real world use of models to support practice, you will gain the skills to choose the best model framework for a given policy decision.

Modelling of Infectious Diseases
