We share a global responsibility for the sustainable provision of food and the consequences of our food choices. The need to eat determines where, how and why we live. Food security (and insecurity) can drive conflict, propels human migration, and informs our relationship with land and environment. With an overarching global perspective, this subject explores food production and consumption, exploring its sociological, political, historical, economic, ethical, and scientific contexts.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Food Security

Australia’s democracy is among the oldest and most stable in the world. Yet the Australian political system is not without its critics or without its challenges. In this subject, students examine the ideas, events, actors and institutions that have shaped the design and operation of the Australian political system. Australian Politics and Government

This subject explores the international politics of the Indo-Pacific, focusing particularly on questions of international security and strategy. The aims of this course are as follows:<ul><li>To introduce you to the international politics of security and strategy in the Indo-Pacific through the lens of contested strategic spaces and geographic sub-regions;</li><li>To integrate an understanding of how the region’s security and strategic arrangements relate to the wider dynamics of international politics;</li><li>To engage with and utilise International Relations theories and concepts, in the context of Indo-Pacific security;</li><li>To provide the analytic and intellectual foundation for further academic research on the region and/or work which requires a sound understanding of the security and strategic dynamics of the contemporary Indo-Pacific;</li><li>To develop further students’ critical and analytical skills through the engagement with a diverse and challenging theoretical and empirical literature, interrogated through the online content material, assessments, and class participation.</li></ul>

International Security in the Indo-Pacific Region

This course surveys the comparative political economy of East Asia, a highly dynamic region and one of critical importance to Australia&#39;s economic prosperity and security. It examines nine countries, including China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia. Within these national settings, it focuses on government interventions in national economies and business involvement in politics, and activities that have helped to shape different rates of economic growth and political openness. This course is offered at Nathan in even years, and Gold Coast in odd years.Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 2009IBA Business and Politics in the Asia Pacific Region, 3027IBA Business and Politics in the Asia Pacific Region or 3027GIR Business and Politics in the Asia Pacific at Griffith University.

Business and Politics in the Asia Pacific

The course is designed both as an exercise in covering the theory and literature in the field, and as a vehicle for encouraging research in migration politics. With respect to theory, the course covers themes in comparative politics including mass political behaviour, parties and party systems, parliamentary systems, elections and electoral systems, representation, legislative behaviour, social capital, identity politics, political elites, citizenship frameworks and immigration policies. With respect to research, the course includes online tasks that are designed to help you engage in research on significant questions regarding the political participation of minority groups in Australia and in comparative perspective. Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 3023GIR Migration and Diversity in Democratic Politics or 3023GIR The Age of Migration at Griffith University.

The Age of Migration

Over the last decade, populists have come to power in the world&#39;s four largest democracies: India, the United States, Indonesia and Brazil, among a range of other countries. Populists have run on platforms challenging the checks and balances of liberal democracy, rejecting globalization and international institutions, and opposing free trade and movement. This course will enable students to gain a deeper understanding of the unique challenges posed by populism to democracy in the twenty-first century, including in Australia and Asia. It examines what happens when populists take power, what the impacts of populism on global politics are likely to be in the 2020s, and how political leaders can respond.Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 3022GIR The Business of Global Populism or 3022GIR The Rise of Global Populism at Griffith University.

The Rise of Global Populism

This course provides an introduction to the politics of international organisations and international law from the perspective of the International Relations (IR) discipline, with a specific focus on peace and conflict. More specifically, it aims to introduce students to i) the main IR approaches to studying international organisations and law and the key debates surrounding them ii) some of the most influential international organisations and legal frameworks and how they operate and iii) central issues pertaining to international law, norms and organisations in the areas of peacekeeping, conflict prevention and human rights. Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 2019IBA Politics of International Law &amp; International Organisations, 2019GIR Politics of International Law and Organisations or 2019GIR International Organisations, Peace and Conflict.

International Organisations, Peace and Conflict

This subject was previously known as POIX108 Introduction to Global Politics.Globalisation has had dramatic implications for the structure and conduct of global politics, now defined by the multiplication of actors and networks. Contemporary crises can no longer be contained within state borders and global problems such as climate change, poverty, health insecurities, and violent conflicts call for global solutions. This unit equips students with the tools to understand the forces that shape the world we live in by introducing them to the key issues, institutions, ideas, and actors involved in global politics. It first outlines the historical context, key theories and concepts, and fundamental institutions of contemporary global politics. Students will then explore important contemporary global issues and crises. Overall, the unit provides students with foundational knowledge about the complexity of global politics, problems and solutions.

Gain a global perspective on issues like poverty, climate change and terrorism. Broaden your understanding of the history of global politics. Identify the challenges facing international governing bodies. Ask what you can do to change the world.

This subject introduces students to key ideas, theories and debates relating to domestic and global political institutions and processes and their broader intersection. War is a primary challenge to international security, peace, and the realisation of human rights. Conflict resolution and peacebuilding have been used to respond to conflicts both between and within states. In this subject we examine the nature and dynamics of political violence paying attention to armed conflict between and within states and structural violence caused by inequality, colonisation, and environmental degradation. This subject also introduces students to the main approaches to conflict resolution and peacebuilding including peace enforcement, state-building, transitional justice, and civil society advocacy. We look at the international, regional, and domestic mechanisms of resolving conflict and account for the perspectives of women, youth, and Indigenous people. Students will learn how to analyse the dimensions of conflict, conduct a conflict assessment, and understand the regional, international, economic, and social dynamics of wars. They will also learn to envision practices of conflict resolution and peacebuilding in relation to a conflict of their choosing. This is a level 2 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
