Expanding on units undertaken in the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma of Mental Health, the Master of Mental Health aims to expand health clinicians’ knowledge and skills in mental health practice and leadership through evidence-based knowledge and practice. Students have the option to pursue a project stream or a research stream within this course. As such, they may complete either a project and two elective subjects, or complete a research dissertation in their final semester. The research stream has a PhD articulation pathway.Both streams consolidate learning from the Graduate Certificate in Mental Health and Graduate Diploma in Mental Health in research, specialist clinical skills and knowledge as well as clinical leadership.

TAS-CNA739 introduces you to psychological therapies used in mental health settings, either as stand-alone interventions or in combination with pharmacological interventions. You will have the opportunity to explore factors relevant to the experience of mental health, as well as a range of psychological interventions that can be implemented in therapeutic engagement with individuals in clinical and professional settings. You will be introduced to the core principles and skills of therapeutic modalities relevant to mental health care and addictions treatment, developing knowledge through a range of online learning activities.

Psychological Therapies in Mental Health Care

This subject provides an introduction to the field of study, integrating information about maternal and infant mental health. Dominant theoretical approaches are presented and considered together with information about infant development and pregnancy. Risk factors for mental health problems are presented for discussion and reflection, and information is provided about common disorders and treatment approaches. In addition, basic skills relating to building and presenting an argument, accessing and using professional literature, making an observational record, creating documents to professional standards, and managing one’s self under pressure will be covered.

Introduction to Perinatal and Infant Mental Health

This subject examines current contemporary practices in the delivery of complex inter-professional care for people diagnosed with mental health issues. Emphasis on the concepts of promotion, prevention and early intervention will be considered. This subject explores concepts of leadership and management in the context of the development of care from both local and population health perspectives. It enables mental health practitioners and leaders of care to develop strategies to address complex health care alternatives.

Advanced Contemporary Mental Health Practice  2

This course examines current contemporary practices in the delivery of complex inter-professional care for people diagnosed with mental health issues. Emphasis on inter-professional care options within a variety of tertiary, secondary and community health settings are explored, especially in the context of therapeutic interventions. This course enables the mental health practitioner to develop, implement and evaluate patient centred treatment options whilst reflecting upon the ethical considerations inherent in determining appropriate care.

Advanced Contemporary Mental Health Practice 1

The course will examine current trends and practice in delivering mental health care to people with a lived experience of mental illness. Emphasis on treatment and care options within tertiary, secondary and community settings will highlight ways in which healthcare agencies partner with other organisations and services such as General Practitioners and Police. Students will debate and reflect the ethical considerations inherent in determining a variety of hospital and community-based treatments. This course is informed by current legislation.

Role of the Mental Health Practitioner in an Acute Setting

The subject will : <ol><li>Examine current contemporary trends and practice in delivering psychiatric care with emphasis on acute crisis and psychiatric emergencies. </li><li>Address treatment/care options within community settings and the integration and partnership with Non Government Organisations, General Practitioners, Police and other emergency services.</li><li>Enable the ethical decisions determining hospital and community based treatment options. </li><li>Reference the National Mental Health Standards and current West Australian Mental Health Division strategies and objectives.</li></ol>

Contemporary Mental Health Practice

This subject was previously known as CCJ741.Forensic mental health is an area of specialisation that involves the assessment and treatment of client&#39;s who are both mentally disordered and whose behaviour has led to or could possibly lead to offending. Forensic mental health as a field therefore represents the interface between community safety and client centred practice. The two key intervention targets in FMH are mental disorders and problem behaviours. This subject will address the first of these targets by providing students with knowledge of general mental health interventions and components of recovery/recovery processes. Students will also be provided with skills in the delivery of specific intervention strategies targeting the most common mental health presentations in FMH. Students will also be provided with the opportunity to practice the skill of treatment plan development and role play delivery of specific strategies.

Gain an overview of the role of mental health and offending in the forensic mental health client population. Examine and evaluate psychiatric interventions that are useful in a forensic mental health system. 

Interventions and Recovery in Forensic Mental Health (Clinical)

The subject considers the most widely accepted approaches, in Forensic Mental Health (FMH), to risk assessment. Subject content primarily focuses upon the prediction of an individual&#39;s likelihood of harming other or being harmed by others. Risk and protective factors are examined beyond that of a present based individual level to include an understanding of developmental and environmental factors. The utility and applicability of different risk assessment tools is also considered as a component of an effective functional analysis and more broadly risk management in Forensic Mental Health.

Risk Assessment and Management in Forensic Mental Health

It is conservatively estimated that 70% of forensic mental health (FMH) clients in Australia are males of functioning intelligence who have English as their preferred language and who align themselves with the dominant Australian culture. As they comprise such a large proportion of the FMH client group, the majority of resources and interventions are targeted towards them. This then means that there are a number of minority populations within FMH, who without our intentional investment and understanding would not receive effective assessment, intervention and management. This subject examines the special needs of these minority FMH groups, namely the specific needs of the elderly, adolescents, women, people with an intellectual disability, people of a different culture or language, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Minority Populations in Forensic Mental Health

This subject will provide a practical understanding of how risk assessment and management is utilised within forensic mental health. This will include a foundation of the key principles for evaluating risk assessment tools, management processes and professional writing in forensic mental health. This subject will then build upon this foundation to provide students with an understanding of how these principles apply in the assessment and management of different offender populations. Students will follow and apply their learning to a number of client case studies across these population groups. They will follow these clients from assessment through to the development of reports which will communicate recommendations for risk management.Assessment details will be advised at the beginning of the subject offering.
