The course has been developed with health industry partners and features a strong inter-disciplinary approach, drawing on content from a broad range of disciplines across the University of Tasmania, with an emphasis on providing you with the flexibility to choose content that best progresses your career ambitions.The program will provide you with a strong foundation in leadership skills and critical thinking, helping you to analyse and resolve the complex problems that you face in the health system. You can then choose from a curated selection of subjects, expanding your knowledge in fields including epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, health service innovation, health informatics and digital health.The Applied Quality and Safety specialisation focuses on the development of capabilities required to lead health service improvement initiatives through the use of quality improvement methods. This specialisation will support you to lead change within your health context to improve the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of patient care. You will learn to design, implement, and evaluate interventions to improve health service delivery using evidence-based quality improvement methodology.Once you have completed your specialisation you will select a research pathway of your choice.<ul><li>The Capstone Pathway will develop your research skills as you design and conduct a quality improvement project relevant to your workplace and/or career aspirations.</li><li>In the Research Pathway, you will complete a substantial piece of original, independent research, focused on the topics that are of particular interest, that provides you with a pathway to a Higher Degree by Research.</li></ul>The Master of Advanced Practice (Specialisation) has been co-designed with major health providers for the health workforce, with content developed to meet the needs of health professionals from all disciplines. Students completing this subject will have acquired knowledge of existing health service models, the internal and external factors that influence the delivery of quality services, and the best-practice models for quality service design.

This broad subject introduces students to the interrelationship between health law and ethics, strategic planning, financial resource management and health policy development. It aims to help students develop a clear understanding of the dynamics of the healthcare environment and the importance of a partnership approach amongst health and human service agencies. It provides managers with the tools to analyse change and develop effective strategies for managing in a rapidly changing healthcare environment and influencing system change. Participants are expected to draw on relevant empirical and theoretical work as well as reflecting on their own workplace and lived experience as they investigate and deepen their understanding of health and human service management.

Management in Health and Human Services

Important Information: Students are unable to self-enrol in this subject. Enrolment must be via review by the Academic Chair to ensure successful completion of SHP632 Applied Health Research Methods: From Research to Practice and to discuss the project. This may be either conducted in a health industry placement under the supervision of the lecturer and nominated preceptor or undertaken as a research project in a relevant coursework area that the student has selected. Project findings will be reported in either a journal article format or industry report and be presented to either peers and/or members of the host organisation.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Applied Health Services Project

This capstone subject builds on previous units in the course that focused on organisational culture and management (HLSC603), quality and safety in health care (HLSC604), leadership (HLSC605) and workforce management (HLSC606). These are critical aspects for effective leadership in a healthcare environment. Understanding organisational culture is essential for leading staff in managing resources for innovative practice improvement and implementing change processes.This subject is essential for students to be able to use advanced knowledge and skill to create strategies for organisational change founded on an evidence-base and critical application of change theory, collaborative communication, workforce management and effective leadership. As leaders in driving change, students will be supported in developing and applying the skills necessary to predict potential outcomes of change and the impact on workforce, organisational performance and safety and quality improvement.The aim of this subject is to develop health care leaders who will demonstrate competencies necessary to address health service challenges and lead staff in opportunities for socially responsible change, capacity building and quality improvement in a complex, evolving environment from both a national and international perspective.

Leading Change in Health Services

You will develop the ability to critically analyse approaches to Case Management in the human services areas of Disability and Aged Care. You will develop advanced knowledge of the definitions, theories, characteristics and processes of case management, the influences on its historical development and practicemodels and critical issues and ethical dilemmas in case management. You will use cognitive and analytic skills to develop their understanding of professional practice, the process of case management and the difference between case management and other service delivery approaches. This subject will critically examine the processes and activities to identify, monitor and improve key elements of aged care organisational functioning, within complex health networks. A review and critique of governance arrangements, including accountability and transparency requirements for staff, managers and boards will be undertaken. Students will have opportunities to hear from experts across Australia and participate in industry case studies and analysis.

This subject will introduce you to the quality, safety and regulatory systems that govern service delivery, reporting and accreditation. Principles, policies, standards and guidelines will be considered in the context of the individual, the consumer and the organisation. A cycle of continuous quality improvement involving planning, implementation, evaluation and adaptation will be emphasised, including the central role of consumers in these processes. You will also explore the importance of organisational vision and values and individual role responsibility and accountability in the achievement of quality and safety outcomes.

The organisational resilience and communication fields of knowledge provide frameworks to review clinical governance arrangements. Additionally, quality improvement theory, techniques and approaches are addressed to equip professionals with the practical skills to enhance safe, high-quality care. This knowledge is used to investigate how to achieve effective performance and monitoring systems.To operationalise these requirements, this subject investigates the application of the National Safety and Quality in Health Service (NSQHS) Communicating for Safety and Recognising and Responding to Acute Deterioration Blood Safety Management Standards. Their necessity and integration with other standards in the NSQHS are also reviewed.
