Society needs professional environmental managers who have the knowledge and skills to effectively tackle problems of sustainable resource use, climate change and biodiversity conservation. Environmental managers also play an important role in helping communities identify and move towards sustainable and just futures. Environmental management is about how we (institutions and individuals) try to identify, protect and enhance environmental values. So we start by examining the variety and meanings of such values. We then explore the various means - the menu of options - for delivering environmental outcomes. These options include instruments such as legislation and market-based approaches; and methods such as community engagement and outreach. We also critically examine the effectiveness of such measures, and consider how we might achieve better management outcomes. These topics are exemplified through case studies in land use planning, food systems, waste management, coastal management, wetlands and biodiversity conservation.

In this subject, you will learn about elements of environmental health practice, risk management and health impact assessment including the assessment, correction, control and prevention of environmental health hazards in order to promote health, protect individuals, protect communities and prevent disease (for example, health protection strategies such as immunisation, and tobacco, e-cigarettes control and building control). You will examine aspects of environmental health practice and further develop an understanding of the role of environmental health practitioner in Government and industry settings.

Environmental Health Management

The subject will provide an overview of the concepts and principles of sustainable waste management. A critical approach to theories, techniques and methods of sustainable waste and resource management will be introduced in the course to enhance students’ knowledge and understanding on waste management. The subject will cover the subject areas of perceptions of waste, classification and characterization of waste, waste audit, 3R principles, waste collection, transportation, treatment technologies and safe disposal, performance evaluation, and strategy and policy regulation. The subject explores human population growth and the impending global food crisis by introducing agriculture as a managed ecosystem, from the earliest shifting cultivation systems to the most intensive systems currently practiced today.
