This program meets one of the knowledge requirements of becoming a registered Migration Agent in Australia. The Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA) recognises Griffith University as a provider of the Graduate Diploma of Australian Migration Law and Practice. Applicants intending to register should also ensure they meet OMARA requirements for registration. Only Australian citizens (or those holding permanent resident visas) can register with OMARA.Our courses are specifically designed to equip emerging migration agents to meet the Occupational Competency Standards for Registered Migration Agents. Graduates are equipped with a broad range of knowledge about the theoretical and practical aspects required to succeed in this occupation. Our program and course design, as well as our online capstone preparation module are important components in supporting students as part of their own study for the independent capstone exam (see OMARA website for details).As a registered Migration Agent, there are a range of opportunities to specialise in certain areas or assist clients with a broad range of important work.Registered Migration Agents have a great deal of career flexibility, with the ability to work in large corporate settings, or to run their own sole trader business from home.This program is open both to lawyers and to those without a legal background - specifically those who wish to become a registered migration agent . As a currently registered migration agent wishing to complete the program, you should also note that it will provide credit towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements. The program may also offer credit to lawyers for CPD. You should check with the relevant law society in this regard.This program is also suitable for people working in industries where having knowledge of migration law is important, including accountants, engineers, ICT professionals and paralegals.Note: Graduates of this award intending to apply to the <a href="https://www.mara.gov.au/" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA)</a> for registration as a Migration Agent must also pass a separate capstone exam. OMARA will provide details of this separate requirement on its website.

This subject introduces students to law, government, and criminal justice in Australia. This subject explains the laws introduced by the Australian government in response to terrorism, from those enacted in response to the 9/11 attacks to those recently passed in response to Islamic State. It focuses on theories of prevention, the impact of these laws on Australia&#39;s criminal justice system, and questions of accountability and human rights. The course also considers policy strategies for countering radicalisation and violent extremism.This subject examines Australia&#39;s legal responses to terrorism. Students will understand diverse threats of terrorism and extremism, including Islamist fundamentalism, right-wing extremism, and growing threats related to conspiracy thinking. Students will critically analyse Australia&#39;s legal responses to these threats and their compliance with human rights. They will examine case law and sentencing judgments to understand how Australia&#39;s counter-terrorism laws are applied and interpreted in practice.

This subject examines the areas in which the criminal justice system and psychological theories of behaviour interact. Topics include the reliability of eyewitness testimony, truthfulness and credibility of witnesses, questioning child victims of sexual assault, the social dynamics of juries and the role of expert testimony.
In this subject, we study the roles of various actors that interact in the courtroom, such as judges, juries, expert witnesses, eyewitnesses, victims and defendants.null; The subject introduces interdisciplinary literatures: criminology, law and society/socio-legal studies, and psychology.null; Topics include the social dynamics of juries, judicial discretion, the validity of forensic science and the role of expert testimony, the reliability of eyewitness testimony, an examination of mental health courts and indigenous justice, and the prevalence of wrongful convictions.
