This subject introduces students to law, government, and criminal justice in Australia. It explores how laws are made, the influence of politics on law reform, the role of the media, protections for human rights, and the elements of criminal responsibility. It considers the historical treatment of First Nations peoples in Australia&#39;s legal system and the role that law plays in promoting justice and accountability. This knowledge provides a foundation for further study on criminal law and justice systems.

This subject explains the laws introduced by the Australian government in response to terrorism, from those enacted in response to the 9/11 attacks to those recently passed in response to Islamic State. It focuses on theories of prevention, the impact of these laws on Australia&#39;s criminal justice system, and questions of accountability and human rights. The course also considers policy strategies for countering radicalisation and violent extremism.This subject examines Australia&#39;s legal responses to terrorism. Students will understand diverse threats of terrorism and extremism, including Islamist fundamentalism, right-wing extremism, and growing threats related to conspiracy thinking. Students will critically analyse Australia&#39;s legal responses to these threats and their compliance with human rights. They will examine case law and sentencing judgments to understand how Australia&#39;s counter-terrorism laws are applied and interpreted in practice.
