In studying this course you will develop an in-depth knowledge about the theory and practice of counter terrorism studies; the emerging domestic, regional and international challenges related to terrorism and its implications for counter terrorism approaches and policies; and the evolution of Australia’s counter terrorism strategies and policies. It will also equip you with a practical skill set to analyse counter terrorism challenges, based on real world examples. The core units, provided through the Department of Security Studies and Criminology, focus on synthesising the latest developments in counter terrorism theory and practices. The elective units allow you to focus on other aspects of security, including intelligence, security and strategic studies, cyber security and criminology.

This unit gives students the opportunity to engage in the composition of a self-directed research project in their field of specialization. This unit necessitates students to thoroughly engage with the existing research on their topic, using it as a stepping-stone in developing their own research skills. Students will be accompanied in devising a research question, translate this question into a set of research tasks, synthesise an appropriate methodological framework, conduct a literature review, and write up the result of their research as a coherent long research essay. This research relies on utilizing academic secondary sources and does not require original empirical work.

Supervised Project in Security Studies

This unit equips students with a solid understanding of defense analysis, examining key questions related to strategic domains and grappling with contemporary challenges such as the impact of emerging technologies on defence and strategy. The unit introduces students to a range of analytical techniques and explores net assessment methods, providing them with the knowledge and skills to critically evaluate defense capabilities and challenges.

Defence Analysis and Net Assessment

This unit provides students with the opportunity to examine in depth a current and topical issue in security studies and criminology. The specific topic of the unit will differ each session, capitalizing on opportunities for departmental academics to present contemporary and cutting edge research in areas of emerging concern for the security of Australia, its region and the world.

Emerging Topics in Security Studies

This subject was previously known as POIX108 Introduction to Global Politics.Globalisation has had dramatic implications for the structure and conduct of global politics, now defined by the multiplication of actors and networks. Contemporary crises can no longer be contained within state borders and global problems such as climate change, poverty, health insecurities, and violent conflicts call for global solutions. This unit equips students with the tools to understand the forces that shape the world we live in by introducing them to the key issues, institutions, ideas, and actors involved in global politics. It first outlines the historical context, key theories and concepts, and fundamental institutions of contemporary global politics. Students will then explore important contemporary global issues and crises. Overall, the unit provides students with foundational knowledge about the complexity of global politics, problems and solutions.

Introduction to Global Politics

This subject was previously known as POIX101 Australian Politics in Global Context.In this subject, we critically assess Australian politics from the perspective of political and economic history, through the lens of social power and financial interests, and drilling down into contemporary debates about economic crisis, globalisation, nationalism, environmental catastrophe and war. With this approach in mind, we examine key Australian political institutions, ideologies, and issues. What is the nature of Australia’s key political institutions (the Constitution, the High Court, Federalism, Government and Parliament), and are they democratic and just? Could we live without them? What are some of the radical critiques of these institutions and the interests they serve? What is ‘Australia’, after all – a unified nation of peoples with shared identities and interests, or a construct that serves wealth and power by masking deep social fractures, or something else again?

Stare down the barrel of Australian political history. Learn about the Dismissal and the Great Depression. Investigate the two-party system and other political institutions. Take on debated hot topics such as globalisation, climate change and war.

Australian Politics in Global Context

This subject exposes students to the key strategic trends in the Indo-Pacific region. It looks at the rise of China and India as emerging regional great powers, and the response by other major players, including the United States and Japan. It introduces students with the most pressing traditional and non-traditional security challenges facing the region today. It also provides students with the conceptual and empirical understanding of Australia&#39;s role, interests and instruments in regional security and stability. The subject also introduces students to the diverse non-traditional challenges influencing Indo-Pacific region. The subject concludes with an assessment of the sources and consequences of key regional actors that influence security and prosperity in the twenty-first century.

Examine the core nations and issues concerning security in the Indo-Pacific Region. Frame Australia’s position as a middle power, predict potential flashpoints, and explain the role of states and intergovernmental agencies in maintaining security.

Strategy and Security in the Indo-Pacific

This subject was previously known as SOCX830 Doing Social Survey Research.This is a unit in applied survey research and data analysis. It will explain key survey techniques used and give you the chance to try them out in practice. The unit covers choosing survey methods, administering surveys and writing good survey questions. It also looks at some of the debates around the potentials and limits of surveys. Qualitative researchers often rely on surveys to prepare themselves for fieldwork or to &#39;triangulate&#39; their results from interview work. But ultimately, surveys are designed to enable statistical analysis of data, and therefore the unit covers some of the statistical techniques used. Understanding how quantitative analytical methods work with and augment qualitative methods requires some knowledge and use of statistics and a statistical package.

Doing Social Survey Research

This subject was previously known as PLTX392 American Politics, POIX392 United States Politics: Money, Culture, Power.US politics is today, as in much of its past, dominated by money and the power that money can buy. US cultural life is also preoccupied with money, in ways that profoundly affect the distribution of political power. Proceeding from these premises, this unit explores the relationship between money, culture and power in contemporary US politics. Topics covered include campaign financing, interest groups and the media; the impact of social inequalities of class, race, gender and sexual preference on US politics; the role of religion and political parties in the formulation of dominant political ideas; and the politics surrounding the global financial crisis and its aftermath.

Take stock of how money and culture feeds into the American political system. Explain the power of the Constitution in US politics. Monitor the influence of special interest groups. See how race, faith and the economy intertwine with policy.

United States Politics: Money, Culture, Power

This unit introduces students to the challenges of intelligence policy. It covers intelligence policy in the Western world--with a focus on the Five Eyes intelligence services and other Western/non-Western allies; as well as adversarial intelligence communities. Upon successful completion of the course students will understand some of the dynamics that affect intelligence policy at the national, regional, and international levels. They will also understand the different mechanisms through which intelligence policy is shaped, formulated and implemented. Moreover, students will gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of coordination, prioritization and evaluation of the intelligence community, and of the dilemmas of and different approaches to integrating intelligence into policy and decision-making at the national and international levels. Finally, students will understand the broad social, economic, and political ramifications of different intelligence-policy choices.

Intelligence Policy

This subject provides a critical introduction to the causes, strategies, and tactics of terrorists and violent extremists in the twenty-first century, and some possible solutions to these problems. It explores the global origins and history of terrorism as a means of political coercion, evaluates the effectiveness of terrorism as a strategy, and examines how terrorism and violent extremism are changing in the twenty-first century. Attention will be given to case studies looking at various religious, political, and far-right and far-left ideological terrorist and violent extremist organisations. By the end of this unit, students will gain an understanding of the dynamics that underpin twenty-first century terrorism and violent extremism, as well as evaluate both hard and soft approaches to countering these. Special attention will be focused on the sources of successful and ethical countering strategies; understanding mechanisms of radicalisation to and from violent extremism; evaluating proportionate state response to terror and violent extremist threats; and assessing the role of new technologies such as social media on how terrorist groups operate.

Explore the range of law enforcement and societal response options available to governments. Understand terrorism as a strategy and as a tactic, recruitment and group dynamics, narratives and the role of global media, and cyber terrorism.
