This course examines how business is changing and how, as a result, there are a growing number of businesses that are focused on responding to major social, environmental, and economic challenges both in Australia and internationally. Businesses are changing the way we approach issues like poverty, homelessness, climate change, and unemployment and alongside these changes we are seeing the growth of social enterprises, impact investment, social innovation, and market-based approaches to creating positive outcomes for people, place and planet.Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 3038IBA The Business of Changing the World at Griffith University.

The Business of Changing the World

This course surveys the comparative political economy of East Asia, a highly dynamic region and one of critical importance to Australia&#39;s economic prosperity and security. It examines nine countries, including China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia. Within these national settings, it focuses on government interventions in national economies and business involvement in politics, and activities that have helped to shape different rates of economic growth and political openness. This course is offered at Nathan in even years, and Gold Coast in odd years.Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 2009IBA Business and Politics in the Asia Pacific Region, 3027IBA Business and Politics in the Asia Pacific Region or 3027GIR Business and Politics in the Asia Pacific at Griffith University.

Business and Politics in the Asia Pacific

The course is designed both as an exercise in covering the theory and literature in the field, and as a vehicle for encouraging research in migration politics. With respect to theory, the course covers themes in comparative politics including mass political behaviour, parties and party systems, parliamentary systems, elections and electoral systems, representation, legislative behaviour, social capital, identity politics, political elites, citizenship frameworks and immigration policies. With respect to research, the course includes online tasks that are designed to help you engage in research on significant questions regarding the political participation of minority groups in Australia and in comparative perspective. Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 3023GIR Migration and Diversity in Democratic Politics or 3023GIR The Age of Migration at Griffith University.

The Age of Migration

Over the last decade, populists have come to power in the world&#39;s four largest democracies: India, the United States, Indonesia and Brazil, among a range of other countries. Populists have run on platforms challenging the checks and balances of liberal democracy, rejecting globalization and international institutions, and opposing free trade and movement. This course will enable students to gain a deeper understanding of the unique challenges posed by populism to democracy in the twenty-first century, including in Australia and Asia. It examines what happens when populists take power, what the impacts of populism on global politics are likely to be in the 2020s, and how political leaders can respond.Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 3022GIR The Business of Global Populism or 3022GIR The Rise of Global Populism at Griffith University.

The Rise of Global Populism

This course provides an introduction to the politics of international organisations and international law from the perspective of the International Relations (IR) discipline, with a specific focus on peace and conflict. More specifically, it aims to introduce students to i) the main IR approaches to studying international organisations and law and the key debates surrounding them ii) some of the most influential international organisations and legal frameworks and how they operate and iii) central issues pertaining to international law, norms and organisations in the areas of peacekeeping, conflict prevention and human rights. Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 2019IBA Politics of International Law &amp; International Organisations, 2019GIR Politics of International Law and Organisations or 2019GIR International Organisations, Peace and Conflict.

International Organisations, Peace and Conflict

This course describes the communication and work practice skills and knowledge required to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the various business industry contexts. It deals specifically with cross-cultural awareness, competencies and issues involving working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, organisations and communities. Graduates from this course will possess the knowledge required to gain a better understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander &#39;ways of thinking&#39; by learning more about Indigenous society (knowledges, traditions, and culture), and the appropriate use of protocols when engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their businesses and the wider communities. Indigenous Australians: Everybody's Business

This subject provides a critical reflection on issues currently facing First Nations peoples, in Australia and globally, in achieving justice. Students will be exposed to Indigenous perspectives on justice through Indigenous-authored research that allows the lived experiences of First Nations people to be heard. Using a strengths-based approach, the course provides students to consider the intersections of history, culture and justice in the ways we have responded and should respond to crime.

First Nations and Justice

This subject advances students&#39; understanding and skills in the analysis of qualitative data. It focuses on the difference qualitative methods commonly applied within criminology and social science more generally. It will further develop students&#39; understanding of qualitative research design, including the ability to reflect critically on the implications of qualitative research within diverse communities. Students will develop specific skills in some basic qualitative data analysis, such as computer assisted thematic analyses.

Qualitative Methods for Social Research

This course introduces the discipline of literary studies through case studies of a wide and diverse selection of shorter fiction. It will combine detailed attention to the formal design of the fiction with a consideration of geographical and social location, and historical context. The literature will be drawn from Ireland, the United Kingdom, the Caribbean, United States of America, and Australia. The course examines literary form and language and develops methods of close reading and is designed to increase your confidence when responding to literature. It also looks at the study of literature as a discipline with its own history, topics, methods, and debates. It considers how the study of literature can be an important practical, vocational, cultural, and social component of a university education.

Narrative Fiction functions as a ‘gateway’ to the Literary Studies major but may also be taken as an elective. This subject aims to provide both a comprehensive introduction to narrative fiction and a sound basis for later work in the discipline of literary studies. Narrative Fiction introduces you to the study of narrative fiction (in the form of novels and short stories) through familiarisation with some of the key tools and concepts of narrative analysis. This subject provides you with the means to investigate how narrative texts are constructed, and why they are constructed as they are. The first module provides you with a tool kit that will allow you to analyse the rhetoric of fiction. The second module introduces you to realism, the most important single influence on the novel. The third and fourth modules present an overview of key developments in prose fiction since the early twentieth century, such as modernism and postmodernism.
