Healthcare delivery is constantly evolving in the face of population growth, our increasingly diverse and aging communities, changing approaches to delivering healthcare and availability of new technology. Health professionals need to be more collaborative, team-focussed and adaptable than ever before. To meet these challenges, the University of Tasmania, in partnership with major health providers, is launching a more flexible and agile approach to providing educational offerings for health professionals throughout their careers.The Graduate Diploma of Advanced Practice (Specialisation) is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to expand your contribution to healthcare and meet your continuing professional development requirements with a flexible online approach. The program has been developed with health industry partners and features a strong inter-disciplinary approach, drawing on content from a broad range of disciplines across the University of Tasmania, with an emphasis on providing you with the flexibility to choose content that best progresses your career ambitions.You will build a strong foundation in leadership skills and critical thinking, helping you to analyse and resolve the complex problems that you face in the health system. You can then choose from a curated selection of subjects expanding your knowledge in fields including epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, health service innovation, health informatics and digital health.The program is open to anyone with a health-related bachelor degree, or a bachelor degree in an unrelated area with at least two years&#39; experience in the health workforce. If you already have a health-related Graduate Certificate, you may be eligible for advanced standing into the course to enable you to progress directly to the specialisation component of the degree.Advanced Practice specialisations are designed to develop graduates who can demonstrate leadership and perform independently in the healthcare system. Each specialisation provides the knowledge and skills for students to make evidence informed decisions in their chosen area to meet industry needs and workforce demands.The Health Economics specialisation will develop your understanding of contemporary economic principles and how they inform healthcare policy decision-making. The challenge posed to human health by climate change and other encroaching planetary boundaries is considerable, and there is growing pressure for healthcare systems to take action to reduce their environmental impact. The economic and fiscal shock caused by COVID-19 provides further impetus to closely examine the sustainability of the existing economic models that underpin our healthcare systems.This specialisation will provide you with a foundation in the theories and models used in economics, financial and managerial accounting in healthcare organisations to explore topical issues in the public and private health sector. You will investigate critical topics and approaches, considering funding models, supply and demand factors, and economic evaluations. Graduate Diploma of Advanced Practice (Health Economics)

The Graduate Diploma in Leadership and Management in Healthcare offers students the opportunity to build on their administrative or management foundations by evaluating current approaches to policy development and implementation in health care delivery.The structure of this course allows students to select a project stream or a research stream relevant to healthcare.

Graduate Diploma in Leadership and Management in Healthcare

Aged Care Leadership and Management: Effective Internal and External Integration

In this subject, you will learn design, management, extraction, integration, and reporting of health data. You will gain practical skills in developing and maintaining fully relational health databases using national health data standards and models. Theoretical and logical principles of health database and system administration will be introduced, including entity-relationship diagrams, normalisation, meta-data and an introduction to SQL for relational database queries and reporting. Specialised tools for visualisation of health data sets will also be taught.

Health Database Fundamentals

In this subject you will develop a specialist working knowledge of health data standards; health data collections; government, insurance and other sectoral health data reporting requirements, and the relationship between these and health service measurement and financing. Models of Activity-Based Funding, including case mix-based systems, and their underpinning reporting and analysis requirements are studied. The pivotal role of the Health Information Manager within all of these arrangements is addressed. You will develop an understanding of the policy and funding frameworks for public and private health services and supporting clinical costing and modelling methods. You will develop competency in health data analytics, and analysis and reporting of hospital and health service utilisation statistics and published health data. Case studies inform your learning of these concepts and your analyses of morbidity, mortality, clinical, productivity and health service data. This subject includes synchronous sessions held during business hours. This means that you will attend sessions each week simultaneously with your facilitator and classmates. This subject is recommended for second-year undergraduate students, and for students who have completed all first-year subjects in the Bachelor of Health Information Management.

Health Data, Funding and Statistics

In this subject you will undertake theoretical studies at the University, and a three-week (equivalent) supervised, professional practice placement in the Health Information Service of an allocated, regional healthcare facility in Australia. You will achieve practice competencies and reinforce professional discipline knowledge. You will undertake key functions on placement to gain understanding of the management, informatics, data analysis, and clinical classificatory roles of hospital health information managers. Prior to placement, you are introduced to the functional components of a Health Information Service and the responsibilities of Health Information Managers in relation to the management of health records, building on the knowledge gained in HIM1003 and developing skills in a related health business communication genre.This subject includes synchronous sessions held during business hours, this means that you will attend sessions each week simultaneously with your facilitator and classmates. This subject is recommended for second-year undergraduate students who have completed all first-year subjects in the Bachelor of Health Information Management.Hospital on-site placements are a core requirement for all students regardless of the instance (blended or online) in which you are enrolled. To meet professional competency requirements students must pass both the professional placement and academic components of the subject.

Hospital Professional Practice

In this subject, you will develop higher level classification skills to a level of competency that qualifies you professionally, as a workforce entry-level clinical/medical coder. You will further develop your working knowledge of medical science and terminology and be introduced to common clinical documentation deficiencies and practice clinical documentation improvement skills. You will be introduced to the health classification-financial relationship within the context of Activity Based Funding and the National Funding Model and develop a deeper understanding of the classification system by examining Diagnostic-Related Group (DRG) and National Weighted Activity Unit (NWAU) assignment. You will have exposure to State and Territory specific guidelines relevant to admitted care data items, which can impact on coding. This subject is graded only as a Pass (P) or Fail (F). A mark of 75% or greater is required to achieve a Pass grade in line with industry standards and expectations. Recommended for students who have completed all first-year subjects in the Bachelor of Health Information Management.

Health Classification C

In this subject, you will develop your competence and confidence in the use of the current edition of the Australian-Modified version of the World Health Organization&#39;s International Classification of Diseases, the Australian Classification of Health Interventions, and the Australian Coding Standards for accurate assignment of codes in a timely manner. You will gain familiarity in searching for and applying ratified coding advice to your code assignment. You will develop your working knowledge of medical science and terminology and be introduced to common clinical documentation deficiencies and methods for improvement. This subject is graded as a Pass (P) or Fail (F). A mark of 75% or greater is required to achieve a Pass grade in line with industry standards and expectations. Recommended for students who have completed all first-year subjects in the Bachelor of Health Information Management.

Health Classification B

In this subject, you will learn about the functions of health information examined in the context of organisational governance. You will demonstrate your understanding of the complex interrelationships between people, organisational structure, processes, technology and associated outcomes using case studies. The purpose of the subject is to help you develop understandings of the multi-purposes of health information for health care decision making, providing the critical evidence in patient care outcomes and organisational performance, as it relates to quality service delivery and patient safety. You will use audit tools to measure and aggregate data to illustrate performance and opportunities for improvement. This subject helps you to understand the important role that the Health Information Manager plays in providing performance-based information as well as monitoring and reporting upon clinical data for service improvement opportunities.This subject is recommended for second-year undergraduate students who have completed all first-year subjects in the Bachelor of Health Information Management. This subject includes synchronous sessions held during business hours. This means that you will attend sessions each week simultaneously with your facilitator and classmates.

Health Information Governance

In this subject, you are introduced to the broad concepts of health data and system development lifecyle (SDLC) and the purpose, scope, design and functionalities of health information systems. You will explore the theoretical concepts behind systems planning, analysis, design, implementation, evaluation, support and maintenance of the systems development lifecycle including issues that impact systems, data and information security. Through your assessments, you will demonstrate technical skills in systems planning, analysis and design phases of the SDLC by creating user stories and data flow diagrams as well as evaluating systems design. You will develop an understanding of how health professionals interact with the health information systems development lifecycle.

Health Information Systems Analysis and Design

Healthcare organisations, in the 21st century, are being challenged by rapid changes. Due to these changes, healthcare organisations must adapt, learn and innovate. This requires a paradigm shift in the mindset and skills of healthcare leaders, managers and practitioners. In this course, you will learn management concepts, tools and techniques to address some of the daunting challenges that healthcare organisations are facing. Each module focuses on how health service managers can manage different aspects of the healthcare landscape. The course uses real-world, health-related scenarios in its materials and assessments to develop practical learning that can be applied in the workplace.

Management Challenges in Health Care

This course provides learners with an opportunity to explore coaching and supervision models across the professions.The course will address specific challenges facing clinical supervisors, particularly in relation to optimising teaching and learning in clinical settings. By exploring best practice, as leaders, the course considers principles that underpin effective mentoring and role modelling in the context of the clinical setting.

Coaching and Supervision in Health

This subject allows students to develop the methodological framework and tools by which to undertake a translational research project addressing a contemporary healthcare management issue. Students will conceptualise and prepare their project applying the values and principles of research integrity, considering risk, benefit and consent issues. Students will gain the skills to appraise the application and matching of methods to research questions. Students will have opportunities to hear from experts across Australia and participate in industry case studies and analysis.
