This subject provides essential background on the different types of surveillance systems used in public health, and the strengths and limitations of the data held within those systems. Students will learn the skills and knowledge required to perform descriptive analyses of surveillance data and to interpret surveillance data appropriately. Students will gain an understanding of the diverse objectives of surveillance systems and how the data collected is used to inform public health action and policy. Students will also learn established methods of evaluating surveillance systems to ensure they are fit for purpose.

Public Health Surveillance

Systems thinking is an approach to public health that allows us to understand and manage complex problems. The purpose of this subject is to introduce key systems thinking concepts and practical methods to address complexity to improve the health of populations. A selection of systems thinking methods will be considered and related to many disciplines across the health and community sector, from local to global contexts. The subject will also outline how systems thinking can contribute to policy decision making when addressing complex problems.

Systems Thinking in Public Health

This subject introduces the scope of public health practice in the 21st century and the social, political and economic context within which public health practitioners operate. The subject combines theoretical and practical material to assist students to understand the social and economic determinants of health, the importance of improved equity to raising health standards worldwide, nationally and locally, and the ways in which communities can be engaged and empowered to identify and address issues that affect their health. Different health outcomes for people across a range of communities will be critically examined in relation to public health practice.

Introduction to Public Health

This subject examines the evidence base for, and the potential impact of, community-level initiatives aimed at (1) reducing the incidence of dementia in the general population, and (2) improving quality of life for those living with dementia. These are classed as public health approaches to dementia. The large- scale impact of dementia on societies, both current and forecast, is surveyed, and used to inform an evaluation of effective public health strategies initiatives designed to reduce this impact. Initiatives investigated include community-wide inclusion and support of people living with dementia and their carers, such as dementia friendly communities and environments, and dementia risk reduction efforts. You will be encouraged to develop skills to explain evidence, arguments and advice on dementia support and prevention in a variety of community contexts.

Community and Public Health Approaches to Dementia 1

This subject was previously known as MPH580 Principles, Practice and Evidence in Health Promotion.
Using evidence informed decision making students will critically apply theoretical understandings to plan, implement and evaluate public health programs to determine efficacy and effectiveness. Current frameworks and theory will be used to plan for priorities for public health action, to better understand the complexities of health behaviour, and to inform research design based on ethical values. Integrating evaluation into the planning and implementation of all public health action will be demonstrated. Quantitative and qualitative evaluation methods to measure the impact of population and community based public health programs will be employed. The role of knowledge translation in the development and dissemination of public health practice and policy will be explored. Students will plan for capacity building and sustainability and will develop an understanding of working within complex systems.

Using knowledge and skills acquired in their postgraduate studies, students will translate what they have learned into practice via this capstone experience. Students will engage in both individual and group-based work in partnership with industry. Using leadership, teamwork, research and critical thinking, students will consider sustainable approaches to address complex population health issues. Projects may include: a program plan or evaluation, policy analysis, extended rapid review, health impact assessment or data analysis, amongst others. This subject introduces students to the theory, principles and practice of leadership in health. It offers the opportunity for students to develop their own personal leadership style and public health professional identity. Students explore the development of leadership skills and strategies related to teamwork and collaboration, organisational capacity building, and the management of change. Students also examine organisations as leaders within complex adaptive systems.

Leadership in Public Health

This subject provides students with the opportunity to analyse the institutions of government that are critical to achieving positive health impacts or addressing potential barriers to achieving positive health impacts. It examines public health impacts in low, middle and high income countries. Students will identify and assess risks to public health using risk and impact assessment frameworks. They will examine the role of legislation, regulation &amp; standards, taxation and trade agreements for advancing public health. Examples will be drawn from environmental health, public health nutrition, occupational health and safety, communicable disease control, climate change, emergency preparedness and disaster management.

This subject will develop students’ skills and knowledge related to the philosophy and practice of qualitative research in public health. Students will explore the different perspectives and opportunities offered by different qualitative paradigms for public health research and apply to a public health issue. Students will explore and critique assumptions and techniques associated with different qualitative research methodologies applicable to research in public health and consider design issues, ethical considerations, qualitative data collection methods, data analysis and reporting techniques.
