Swinburne’s Bachelor of Psychological Sciences is a first step to becoming a qualified psychologist. Psychology examines what makes us do the things that we do by seeking to understand personality, psychological disorders and the effects of social situations on our behaviour.You will learn about cognitive processes including memory, perception and attention, and how we change as we age. Health Sciences Research Dissertation Preparation

Students undertake an independent research project. The project provides an opportunity for students to undertake independent research on a topic relevant to a specific discipline, for example, dietetics, occupational health and safety, health promotion, health policy and management, food science or public health. Supervision is available where appropriate. Students are able to pursue a topic of interest to their sponsors or relevant to their workplace. Students will formulate a research question, design and execute a study and apply their findings in a community or workplace context.

Secure an opportunity to design and execute an independent research project. Study a specific health science topic relevant to your sponsor or workplace.Analyse, interpret and assess data and apply findings in the community or at work.

Health sciences research underpins the generation and translation of new knowledge into health policy and practice. This subject addresses the scope of health-related research and the range of research methods available to undertake research in the health professions. As an introductory level subject , it will outline the diverse approaches that can be taken in qualitative and quantitative research design. The steps in developing health-related research questions, selecting appropriate research methods for those questions and identifying, appraising and synthesising existing research findings underpinning those questions will be examined. This unit aims to provide the opportunity for students to develop the skills to critically assess the quality of health science research.

Introduction to Health Sciences Research

In this subject, you will first be introduced to concepts fundamental to the understanding of Human Physiology such as the organisation of the human body, homeostasis, basic cell structure and function, body fluids and the movement of molecules within body fluid compartments. The basics of nervous system and endocrine system function in the context of physiological regulation and homeostasis will then be explored. This information will provide the foundation for the study of major organ systems of the body including the muscular, digestive, cardiovascular, immune, respiratory, renal, and reproductive systems. This subject will also include content on metabolism of nutrients and acid-base homeostasis.

Map the complex architecture of the human body and learn how it’s organised and structured. Navigate the journey of the smallest cell to the largest organ. Observe how the body performs and adapts, responding to stress and disease to maintain life.

This subject provides an introduction to health psychology in the Australian context. You will learn about how psychological theory can be applied to understanding health enhancing behaviours and health risk behaviours. This subject serves as an introduction to the human body and key organ systems. It begins with anatomical terminology and the relationships between body cells, tissues and organs. Key cell processes such as respiration, protein synthesis, and cell division will be covered. Students will then explore the basic function and control of the circulatory, respiratory, digestive and excretory systems, and how these systems contribute to the changing needs of the human body. The subject includes exploration of the lymphatic and immune systems and how they provide defence against microorganisms.
