The spaces in which we live, work and play are profoundly influenced by the way land is used and developed. By setting visions and policies for building and land use, planning professionals play a significant role in creating these spaces.This subject provides an introduction to the language and processes of planning in relation to land use and built form. Different land-use and development situations will be explored, including how they interact with broader societal contexts.This will provide a deeper understanding of planning practice, and its real-world influence.

Planning for Land Use and Built Form

Plans are vital instruments in urban and regional planning. They envisage the future of a local environment and shape land use and development practice.Making plans requires a diverse skill set, including site analysis, data analysis, mapping, plan drawing, and code writing. In this subject you will be introduced to these skills through a wide variety of practical exercises.As the subject progresses, you will develop an understanding of how these practical skills help build towards an integrated plan. At the end of the subject, you will understand how graphical communication, data analysis, site investigation, and built form analysis contribute to planning work.

Introduction to Plan Making

This subject introduces students to sources of law affecting building projects (including the judicial system, common and statute law, contract law, torts and dispute resolution) in relation to the various types of contracts available for project delivery. Construction Contracts and Procurement

This theory informed subject aims to synthesise and stretch the students&#39; understanding and application of design methodologies towards speculating on and imagining new visions for the sustainable future. It focuses on extreme, complex and bizarre environments. Philosophical and theoretical readings are explored as other ways of thinking and seeing the world. Interior Lighting Design

This subject introduces the concept of Adaptive Reuse and Heritage, the initiation of sustainable design responses to the adaptive re-use contemporary reuse of historic buildings with minimal impact on the heritage significance. Students will undertake research methods to synthesise knowledge and technical skills in ways that embrace history, and includes indigenous perspectives, in a contemporary context. This subject aims to develop an awareness of environmental and human health impacts of housing in order to inform critical and creative decision-making in the design and renovation of houses. You will explore how housing affects our own health and the health of the planet, and how sustainable design can reduce environmental impacts and improve wellbeing. You will also learn how to make design choices that are more sustainable in relation to your personal needs and circumstances. The subject will emphasise reflective thinking, practical knowledge and an integrated approach that relates issues of sustainability to quality design, functionality and value.
