Kori's journey: from dropping out of high school to getting a degree

Like many, Kori was taught that if you don’t graduate high school, you can’t go to university—so it was a life-changing moment when he spoke to a student advisor and discovered that this wasn't true.

When Kori dropped out of high school, he was left feeling like there were no avenues to continue learning and that his life wasn’t going to be meaningless as result. But it turns out that having an ATAR or getting good grades in high school aren’t the only ways into university.

In actual fact, there are many unconventional pathways into degrees and courses, which meant that the Bachelor of Fine Art Course Kori needed to become an animator was in reach.

Flexibility and support

One of the many benefits of studying online is the flexibility it provides—especially for those who find a traditional learning setting unsuitable to their needs and preferences. This was the case for Kori, “I’m a night owl, and being able to work at night when I’m most motivated is very critical for me.”

This flexibility along with the additional support and guidance from the Open Universities Australia student advisors has also helped Kori navigate the world of higher education while suffering from dyslexia and mental health struggles. “I suffer with severe social anxiety," Kori shares. "Being able to go at my own pace and not have a teacher or other classmates around is very helpful.”

Finding your own pathway

Kori went from feeling like life was meaningless and his talents were useless, to feeling confident and inspired, and is now on track toward his dream job—something he never thought was possible.
