Can I complete study and a Netflix series at the same time?

Your dedication to study is as unwavering as your passion for the latest series on Netflix. So which do you choose? Perhaps it’s both.

A brand-spanking-new season of (insert your favourite show here) just dropped. The trouble is, your latest bout of assignments have also dropped. Juggling study while bingeing Netflix isn’t for the faint of heart, but it can be done.

In fact, a little healthy leisure may actually help you stay focused.

The positive impact of leisure on achieving your goals

Studies have shown leisure activities (that’s anything that brings you joy, helps you relax or takes your mind off life’s pricklier sides) are actually linked to reduced stress levels, heightened creativity and improved overall mental health.

As a flow-on effect, reduced stress levels can then result in improved focus and productivity. And, as we all know, being able to focus and be productive is key to achieving your study goals.

So if you’re feeling Netflix-induced guilt, hold right there! Let’s focus on how we can leverage your passion for plotlines and turn it into serious results.

3 tips for leveraging leisure for study success

1. Choose a series (or activity) that truly motivates you

You read right! The more you want to watch a series, or partake in that activity, the better. It might sound counterintuitive, but by ensuring you have something outside of study that’s piquing your interest, you’ll be better placed to knuckle-down and enjoy it once the hard work is done.

2. Use a reward system

How does an hour of Netflix for an hour of study sound? Or an episode of your new obsession in return for finishing your weekly reading? Set up a reward system that truly motivates you, and most importantly, stick to it. No watching episodes if you haven’t hit those milestones. If you really want to find out what happens next, you’ll have to hit the books first. Genius!

3. Share the joy with classmates

We all know at least one lecturer who regularly kicks class off with a “what did we get up to on the weekend?”, even in the forum that is online learning. Having a TV show or leisure activity you can talk about not only takes the pressure off your talking points, it can help you establish relationships with other students in your class.

And once your undying love of Seinfeld forges a friendship or two, you can expect benefits such as increased retention, mood and motivation. There's proof this happens when you study amongst friends.

So there you have it. Some serious TV watching can live, nay thrive, alongside study. You just need to find a way to make it work for you.

Now onto more important debates. Like which series will you choose?
