- Apply principles of clinical governance and risk management to develop quality improvement initiatives that enhance care/support, and organisation performance outcomes in health and human service settings.
- Develop effective high-level leadership communication skills and strategies to foster a culture of safety and quality among health and human service teams, ensuring compliance with best practice standards.
- Integrate evidence-based approaches into decision-making processes to address complex issues related to safety, quality, and risk management in health and human service settings.
- Module One: Governance - Corporate and Clinical
- Module Two: What is risk management and what are the tools and methodologies of safety and quality?
- Module Three: Creating a system that reliably delivers safe and high quality services
- Module Four: How can we achieve system level change and improvement?
This subject aims to provide a broad understanding of governance, clinical governance, and risk management within the field of health and human services. Whilst clinical governance initially arose in response to major quality and safety scandals within health services, the concepts are increasingly being applied across a broader range of service areas - driven by the need for assurance from the public, providers, funders, accreditation agencies, and governments, that services are delivered safely and that they meet quality standards. In contrast, risk management has a more established history across various sectors and industries, supported by both national and international standards.
This subject will explore the practical implementation of governance and risk management frameworks and strategies, as the basis for workplace action to improve the safety and quality of patient and client care and support. You will be challenged to reflect on your own professional practice and leadership capacity, and you will gain insights into how effective governance and leadership approaches can shape the quality of care and support delivery, improve outcomes, and manage risks. The subject emphasises practical, real-world application of best practice, empowering you to identify and evaluate threats to safe and high-quality care, and to drive positive change in your workplace by fostering a culture of safety, accountability and continuous improvement. By understanding and applying contemporary risk and governance frameworks and strategies, you will have developed skills to lead and innovate in the context of a rapidly evolving health and human service landscape.
